The largest city in North Brabant, Eindhoven, is a curious mix of typical Dutch atmosphere and a high level of industry.

To quote Humphrey Bogart in “Casablanca” and adapt it a little, “I came (back) to the Netherlands for the waters.” Then I ended up in Eindhoven and started to hear from all of my acquaintances “Waters? What waters? We’re in Eindhoven.” Bummer, right?

Yet in the nine months I’ve been living here, I’ve discovered that the Netherlands’ city of technology and innovation has more to offer than I had initially thought. Here are some of the best experiences.

1. Go for a run in the Stadswandelpark

Even if running isn’t your thing (no matter what time of day it is), the beautiful trees you’ll see here will inspire you to at least take a walk.

Stadswandelpark is conveniently located on the edge of Eindhoven city centre (12 minutes by bike), so if you’re in Eindhoven, there’s really no excuse not to go.

The Calling Lady. Image: Cristina Damian/Supplied

Here you can also find the Radio Monument, a eulogy to the first wireless radio connection to the Dutch East Indies which took place on March 11, 1927 — super cutting edge for its time.

The Calling Lady, as it is more commonly known, also reminds us of the early radio transmission of a speech by Queen Wilhelmina in 1945 from the Philips Research Laboratories (now known as NatLab).

2. Walk through the online doors of Philips Museum

The coronavirus crisis has certainly changed the way we do certain things — for better or for worse. Picture this, you’re at home, but you’re not really in the work mood.

So what about looking at other people’s work? You can now tour the Philips Museum online! We don’t know about you, but we would never have thought of doing that before.

Quite fascinating, isn’t it? Image: Cristina Damian/Supplied

Launch your online journey by reading the Philips history (you can zoom in and out), then start the museum tour. What is there to see, you might ask? Well, everything!

From the oldest existing Philips carbon-filament lamps to the energy-saving lamp, the first X-ray lamp, the first X-ray machine, the portable radio/cassette player, and the “ping-pong for one” gadget from 1996.

Go further and you will see old devices, instruments, and tools with which the progress of today has been made. They are put together in a recreated room where once upon a time, everything began.

3. Enjoy some music at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven

If you (like us) are tired of Spotify, you can enjoy music from the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. Fancy some ambient music while you work from home, or some tunes to get you going while you’re working out? In the mood to relax or party?

The Muziekgebouw Eindhoven has you covered. You can choose between classical, pop, and jazz — and they even have a kids section.

4. Visit Van Abbemuseum

The best thing about an online-oriented world is that you can do online activities whenever you feel like it — goodbye to weeks of planning and trying to find a date that works for you and all your friends.

You know what this means, don’t you? Another break, another museum! Enjoy the Van Abbemuseum from the comfort of your home. Or even better, when you have some free time on the weekend, just go check out the museum’s exhibitions in person!

5. Unwind after work at Parktheater

Fancy enjoying theatre shows directly from your couch AND learning a bit of Dutch? Parktheather Eindhoven has prepared amazing free (Dutch) performances.

To spread the love of theatre, Parktheather also makes a recommendation for shows you can watch on Netflix or Videoland. They’re all in Dutch though — perhaps a secret conspiracy to help internationals learn this tricky language?

Pretty nice, right? Now it’s time to make up for the time spent on the work chair and/or the couch and get out for some fresh air. Hop onto your bike (or walk, if that’s your thing) and discover the green Eindhoven.

6. Enjoy a sunset in Wandelpark Eckart

Nature is the most suitable remedy for all ills. Wandelpark Eckart, consisting of coniferous forest, was the first beautiful place I discovered in Eindhoven and it has remained my dearest one. It’s only 15 minutes away by bike from Eindhoven Centraal train station. 🚲

Wandelpark Eckart at sunset is a perfect place. Image: Cristina Damian/Supplied

One thing that makes it different from the rest is the Karpendonkse Plas, a large lake that has an island in the middle. Wandelpark Eckart is perfect for enjoying a picnic with your family or friends.

7. Set up your tent in Recreatieplas Hanevoet

Thinking about what to do over the weekend? This park isn’t exactly in Eindhoven, but it’s still pretty close — 20 minutes by bike from Eindhoven Centraal station. Recreatieplas is, duh!, perfect for recreation.

Fish lover? Try get some in Recreatieplas Hanevoet. Image: Cristina Damian/Supplied

You can set up your tent and start fishing, teach your kids how to ride a bike, or walk your pets. Be sure to take care of your dogs, and not to get into a fight with the ducks you’re sure to find in the lake. It’s also a perfect place to jog and play badminton. 🏸

Eindhoven is about technology and innovation and it might lack the typical Dutch canals, but it can still amaze you.

So after watching a theatre performance online or visiting a museum — online or in-person — grab a bike and your family or friends and explore all of Eindhoven’s best outdoor spots.

What are your favourite things to do in Eindhoven? Did we leave anything out? Tell us in the comments below!

People are always banging on about Randstad. It’s the place to be, they say. But is that really the case?

While the Randstad may be the most popular part of the Netherlands for expats to live in, there are other, under-rated but no-less-impressive locations in the lowlands that would make a wonderful home. The largest city in North Brabant — Eindhoven — is one of them.

From job opportunities to housing and city life, here are nine things you should know before you make the move to what is nicknamed de gekste (the craziest).

1. Eindhoven is THE place for tech talent

Are you tech-savvy? Or looking to remould yourself into the type of person who is? Good on you! Oh, and Eindhoven is the place to be.

Why? Here are just a few impressive tech names that have found their home in the largest city of North Brabant.

  • ASML: Dutch multinational that designs and manufactures technology that helps make computer chips (yes, they’re heavily in demand),
  • Philips: electronics giant currently focusing on health tech,
  • Carbyon: a start-up that deploys carbon capture technology to mitigate climate change,
  • Sirius Medical: spin-off from the Netherlands cancer institute and a scale-up that aims to transform breast cancer surgery.

High Tech Campus: the smartest square kilometre in Europe

Awarded as one of the best places for tech venture development by big names such as Forbes, The Financial Times, and Fortune, High Tech Campus is the largest start-up hub in the Netherlands — and it’s based in Eindhoven!

2. It’s job seeker friendly

With tech companies come — you guessed it — jobs. Plenty of them. Well paying ones at that! This marks Eindhoven as a great place for international job seekers, not only ones that are already based in the Netherlands, but also abroad.

With many innovative companies, job opportunities are plentiful in Eindhoven. Image: Abuzer van Leeuwen/Supplied

Many of these companies owe their fortunes to their international success, meaning that they are often happy to hire non-Dutch speakers.

However, if your job hunt takes you elsewhere, that’s also fine. Eindhoven is within commuting distance of a number of large Dutch cities and towns.

Brainport Eindhoven

If you’re looking for a place where bright minds get together to solve issues around human health, food, energy, and mobility, look no further than Brainport Eindhoven.

Home to around 5,000 innovative companies, this is the place you want to be if you’re after a challenging job in IT or tech.

3. Buying a house in Eindhoven is actually possible

Unless you’ve been living mortgage-free under a rock for the past couple of years, you know that housing prices in the Netherlands are steadily rising — and Eindhoven is, of course, no exception to this trend.

But it’s still better and far cheaper to buy a house in Eindhoven than, say, in Utrecht or Amsterdam. For example, if you were looking to buy a house in Eindhoven, it would cost you 555K on average. At the same time, a house in Utrecht would come at more than 600K

The obvious benefit (lower prices) aside, there’s also a lot of construction going on in and around Eindhoven. Some of its surrounding villages belong to the most beautiful in the Netherlands, so settling in one of them is definitely something to consider.

On top of that, there’s plenty of space compared to other Dutch cities. Both in terms of getting a tad bigger home and in terms of being able to roam around in nature (more on that later). So if you find Randstad too crowded, Eindhoven is the place to go.

Furthermore, companies like ASML are planning to double in size, meaning that houses will be in high demand in this area in the coming years.

Even though now may be a great time to invest in an apartment in Eindhoven, getting some help from the pros can still save you a lot of hassle. MyDutchMortgage.online can help you easily arrange your mortgage — no Dutch needed.

4. There are some awesome neighbourhoods for expats to live in

We all love a beautiful home — but where exactly should it be situated? Of course, factors such as where you want to work, or where you’re going to school play a role, but if you’re looking for some insider tips, we recommend that you keep an eye on these neighbourhoods:

Meerhoven

Want to be surrounded by neighbours who are equally perplexed by the Dutch language? Then Meerhoven is the place for you. In recent years, more than 80% of houses sold in this neighbourhood have been bought by internationals.

Strijp-R and Strijp-S

Once an industrial area belonging to Philips, this snazzy new neighbourhood has developed to become a hub for cultural events and activities. The old industrial buildings have been transformed into creative office spaces and housing.

Schrijversbuurt

Schrijversbuurt (meaning writer’s neighbourhood) is a great area to consider if you’re torn between choosing an apartment or a more family-style home. The neighbourhood offers both! On top of this, selling prices tend to be on the less eye-watering side.

5. Eindhoven is locally — and globally — connected

Thanks to its smooth highway system and a multitude of convenient train and bus connections, you can get from Eindhoven to cities like Rotterdam, Antwerp, or Brussels in one fell swoop.

North Brabant’s largest city is also home to the second biggest airport in the Netherlands, giving you easy access to the rest of Europe — and the world.

Within the city itself, the best way to get around is — you guessed it — by bike. It’s a pretty safe way too. Eindhoven was named one of the five most bicycle-friendly cities in the world!

6. It’s the centre of design

As we mentioned above, Philips used to be based in Eindhoven. The huge company owned several buildings throughout the city — but it left them empty when it decided to move to Amsterdam.

However, the cityscape of Eindhoven adapted to the change, filling these buildings with hip new companies. Many of which centre around creativity, design and innovation. It’s not all tech and computer chips you know!

7. There are some impressive new developments on the way

Just like any other place in the world, really, Eindhoven needs to make sure that the city is livable for the generations to come — and boy, is it doing a good job! These are just some of the projects that will make the city an even nicer place to live in.

Knoop XL

Eindhoven is growing and thriving. This means, aside from plentiful job opportunities, that its infrastructure needs to keep up. That’s what the international Knoop XL is all about. Located between the PSV football stadium and Dommel, the area is currently home to around 200 people.

However, within the next 20 years, there are plans to make it into an international hub with new working locations, plenty of greenery to relieve heat stress, no cars, and homes for about 15,000 people! 🤯 Yep — your read that right.

Knoop XL is also supposed to see direct train connections with cities like Düsseldorf, Aachen, and Liège. This video explains just how cool it’s going to be.

The Dutch mountains

We all know that the Netherlands doesn’t have anything even closely resembling a mountainous landscape — but that’s (kind of) about to change.

The mountains we are talking about is a new building complex constructed with bio-based material with two towers, which will be used for offices, new homes, and a hotel.

This space, nicknamed the living room of Eindhoven, will become a true symbol of “healthy and sustainable urbanisation.”

With all the new developments underway, it is time to start looking into buying a place in Eindhoven. MyDutchMortgage.online can help you with all the paperwork. Simply head to their website and book a call.

8. The city is thriving

In spite of the challenges the past few years have brought to the Netherlands, Eindhoven is not only surviving — but thriving.

Eindhoven is a hidden foodie paradies. Image: Abuzer van Leeuwen/Supplied

From hosting larger events such as Dutch Design Week and GLOW festival to being home to smaller venues and places to go out, Eindhoven has a rich and vibrant cultural scene.

Good to know: It’s also a great place for foodies. 😋

9. Eindhoven is a great place for nature lovers

Dutch cities and vast greenery usually don’t mix well. However, Eindhoven offers plenty of nearby nature areas for the keen wanderer. The natuurgebied Dommeldal is one of the most popular ones.

For some more proper nature, residents of Eindhoven can head to the nearby De Groote Peel National Park to enjoy vast areas of wetland with plenty of bird species.

Speaking of national parks, the Belgian Bosland is also a mere 45-minute drive away — and it’s the biggest adventure forest in all of Flanders. Talk about exciting day trips!

Ready to move to Eindhoven? Wonderful! Need some more convincing? That’s okay. Maybe a day trip experiencing what the city has to offer will do the job. 😉

Last night a man was killed in front of a cafe in Eindhoven after an alleged argument on the street. Police are uncertain as to whether one or two perpetrators are responsible, but have made an arrest.

Shortly after the victim was stabbed, paramedics were on scene and attempted to resuscitate the man, said Eindhoven police. Sadly, their efforts were in vain. The victim passed away at the scene of the incident, on the Woenselse Markt. He was 28 years old and from Turnhout in Belgium.

Police arrested a suspect last night, a 31 year-old man from Eindhoven, who is currently detained and being questioned. The police of East Brabant are asking for any potential witnesses of the stabbing to call 0900-8844.

Dozens of Eindhoven police spent last night searching for a man with an axe.

The man used the weapon to threaten people near an Aldi supermarket around 9 PM on Thursday, before driving away in a car. At least 15 police cars were dispatched in search of the man, as well as police dogs and a helicopter.

Police searched for the car by license plate, and when it was spotted later in the evening a chase ensued. It ended on the Oirschotsedijk, where the man fled on foot into a cornfield.

In spite of search efforts, police say around midnight the suspect managed to get away. They will continue to search.

Turns out coronavirus is a real party-pooper — judging by the remnants of drug use in sewers, at least. Water research institute KWR says that the use of cocaine and ecstasy in Amsterdam declined spectacularly since the lockdown.

We’re speculating that there could be a direct correlation between drug use and the number of British stag parties in the Dutch capital. Compared to the year prior, drug use in Amsterdam halved. Cocaine use also fell by a quarter. A global pandemic wasn’t enough to stop partiers in Utrecht and Eindhoven, however. Drug use in these areas remained largely unchanged, reports de Volkskrant.

The annual KWR study measures an indication of the drug use of 1.5 million people in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven, and smaller municipalities in Eindhoven. This year, the study coincidentally took place in the first week of lockdown. “This created the unique situation where we could measure the drug use of the population in the absence of an active nightlife and of tourists,” explains KWR researcher Thomas ter Laak.

Who stopped the party?

Coronavirus stopped the party! Well, the coronavirus lockdown stopped tourists coming to Amsterdam, says drug researcher Laura Smit-Rigter of the Trimbos Institute. ‘But the closure of clubs and cafes where many Dutch people come is also a cause. People hardly went out,” she explains.

However, Smit-Rigter believes that the lack of use may diminish soon as people begin to organize parties in smaller settings. This could also be why the use of coke and ecstasy in Utrecht remained stable during the lockdown.

What about weed?

If anything has remained normal, it’s smoking weed in the Netherlands. The sewer research shows that this use remained stable, probably because coffee shops were allowed to remain open. #NeverForget the lines outside the coffee shops when the government announced that nearly 600 coffee shops would close for the duration for the lockdown. #AlsoNeverForget that the government backed down on that after just one day, allowing coffee shops to reopen for takeaway only.

It really feels like summer in Eindhoven at the moment. June 1 was a moment of celebration, as cafes and restaurants could finally reopen after three months of being closed to customers.

So now that we are allowed to enjoy a nice meal at a restaurant, which place should you pick? What’s out there to eat in The Netherlands’ city of technology and innovation? We’re here to help you again!

Last Monday was a big day for the horeca industry, since almost all restaurants, cafes and pubs faced real challenges in the past 3 months. This week was truly a week of reunion, as you could gather around with your friends again and celebrate it by having a pleasant summer night outside.

All restaurants and customers must respect the RIVM rules, and if you have even the smallest sign of a cold, please stay at home. But if you know you’re healthy, then you can take advantage of it and go out. Make an online reservation and take your family and friends (but not too many of them) and pick one (or all!) of these 5 awesome places in Eindhoven where you can experience small bites of Heaven.

Vintage Restaurant

“It’s so good to use plates again!”, the chef of Vintage Restaurant in Eindhoven said to me in the afternoon of June, 1. Now that the summer is here, it’s hard to miss the Vintage terrace. It’s one of the first things you see when you enter on the Kerkerstraat. This place offers a good view of the city hustle without being too much part of it. Cozy and intimate place, Vintage Restaurant has delicious food at a very affordable price. And the surprise menu is always a very good choice. Word!

So, what’s there to eat, you ask? For starters, you can choose tuna/pork belly/steak tartare and they come with sweet and sour vegetables, crème fraiche, fennel, ponzu, or wakame. Main courses include them all: deer, beef shoulder, duck breast, halibut, Iberico pork. Of course, you always have options for vegetarian dishes. The desert is the best part: sweet or salty, whatever you’ll have it will make you feel in Heaven.

You will often find the owners there and all the staff will make sure you have everything you need. The food here will make you thank personally the chef and the drinks will give you Italian and Spanish vibes.

In order to avoid crowding, it is preferably to make reservations either by phone (040-237 79 97) or by email (reservations@vintagerestaurant.nl). Vintage is a 100%-and-more gezellig place.

Lucie Cocina

Bienvenidos! “Strong essences are kept in small bottles”, goes the saying and I think it was meant for Lucie Cocina. For people out there who grew up with Spanish telenovelas, you must remember that “Cocina” is the Spanish word for “Kitchen”. And not only the name is Spanish, but – you guessed it! – so is the food and the staff. How awesome is that? Situated in the heart of the shopping street in the city-centrum, it’s hard to miss this place which has a perfect Latin vibe.

So, what can you eat here? Spanish food, what else?! Their breakfast (starting at 9:30 AM) includes Tostada and Tortillas, but it’s best to check their full breakfast & lunch menu. Starting 12 PM delight your senses with an entire range of Spanish lunch and dinner dishes. Everything you choose to eat at Lucie Cocina will be just great. Personally, I had lobster salad, steak tartare, veal balls, pork cheek and dessert with mango and passion fruit. Yeap, I had to try them all. I recommend you do the same.

What’s more, you can bring Spain into your house, by buying from them olive oil, Bellota and Campo Iberico ham and Spanish wines, either for yourself or as a gift for someone else.

Be sure you go there and enjoy this piece of Spain right in the heart of Eindhoven! If you don’t want to risk it, you can always go for the take-away option and you get 10% discount.

Bistro Sophie

Bistro Sophie is the perfect choice for a fancy dinner. You won’t find a place that pays more attention to details than here. The staff is always making sure that the food is the best, and you always have something to drink, be that a cold beer, a cocktail or a delicious glass of wine. The atmosphere here is something special and the warm ambiance and light contribute to a romantic dinner.

How fancy are these? Appetizers and starters at Bistro Sophie. Image: Cristina Damian/Supplied.

The staff is more than happy to help you select the right wine for your food. What food you ask? So much of it, truly! Start with either gamba, eendenlever or cremeux Old Amsterdam. Continue with amazing dishes made of halibut, duck or pick only veggies plates. Don’t forget to save some space for desert: amazing combinations of either tropical fruits or delicious cheese. Or do like me, and ask for a chocolate-special dessert! They also have a take-away menu during this period.

If you don’t live in Eindhoven and want to spend a night here, they can offer you a place to sleep. Right above the restaurant, there is the Auberge Nassau Bed and breakfast with affordable prices.

Address: Wilhelminaplein 14, 5611 HE Eindhoven

Welp

Welp is in the De Bergen neighborhood in Eindhoven. That is, the centre of this city. Their 3-course surprise menu costs €35 pp and you will definitely be surprised. They have international cuisine and if a bottle of wine is too much for you, you can drink by the glass. 20 different glasses, to be precise. Sounds like a fun night, am I right?

The cool thing that won my heart at Welp was that their menu is actually a magazine. While waiting for your food, you can discuss with whoever you’re going there the things you see in the magazine. They are in Dutch, but hey, you can still chat about the pictures.

Their motto during Corona is “Stay at home, we deliver.” What are you waiting for? Give them a call (06 38 31 16 34).

Down Town Gourmet Market Eindhoven

Woah, is this heaven on earth or what? Before Corona, it was a bit too crowded to be heaven, but the food surely still is from there!

Down Town Gourmet Market Eindhoven. Image: Cristina Damian/Supplied.

What are you craving? Mexican, Italian, South-American, Spanish, Greek, Japanese, Dutch? This place has got you covered and there’s no need to make a reservation during this period. Just show up there and the staff will provide you with your personal QR code needed for orders. That’s right! Down Town Gourmet Market has an internal ordering app. With Butlaroo, you can both order and pay online, but this shouldn’t be too surprising. We are, after all, in Eindhoven, the city of technology. You can only spend 2 hours there, but nobody is stopping you to come several times per week! And you will definitely need to come again and again and again since you must try all of their food.

Address: Smalle Haven 2-14, 5611 EJ Eindhoven

Even if going to a restaurant will be a different experience from what we’re used to, we think enjoying awesome food is completely worth it. Despite all these adjustments, all restaurants will do their best to help you enjoy their great atmosphere and delicious food!

Where else could you enjoy Brabant hospitality in Eindhoven? Let us know in the comments!
