It’s almost tulip season in the Netherlands, that time of year when you see fields full of these beautiful flowers. But where to best see them?

There are some stunning spots to see the tulips between Amsterdam and Leiden — but these aren’t the only places to view these gorgeous flowers.

With the weather brightening up, spring is the perfect time to get out of the house and take in the Dutch landscape. The Netherlands boasts a range of floral delights, including the famous Dutch tulip and an array of cherry blossoms. 🌸

There are tons of top locations, but these are the best tulip fields in the Netherlands!

Amsterdam Tulip Festival

The Tulip Festival has planted a tulip for everyone in Amsterdam. It’s truly a sight to behold! The tulip festival can be enjoyed in Amsterdam (and across the Netherlands) in over 85 locations!

The blooming period of tulips in the Netherlands is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. Usually, there are flower parades, markets, as well as long fields of flowers, and you can ride your bike around the city to see it all.

One thing’s for sure: there will be tulips everywhere. 🌷

beautiful-tulip-season-in-Amsterdam-keukenhof-gardens
What a beautiful and colourful sight with tulip season! Image: Freepik

The tulip festival began on January 18 at Dam Square. “A tulip for every Amsterdammer” is their motto, after planting 25,000 tulips in November ready for spring. In the coming weeks, people across the Netherlands will marvel at the simple beauty of the tulip.

Where can I find Tulip Festival events in Amsterdam?

So, where can you find a beautiful assortment of tulips during the festival? Here’s where it’s all going down if you want to get tickets to the Amsterdam Tulip Festival.

All the public displays are free to enjoy, for some museum gardens, ticket pricing applies.

We have been talking about tulips non-stop! Orange tulips, the Dutch national colour, pink, a widely loved colour and even purple tulips, we love them all.

De Keukenhof

This is the place a lot of people choose to visit for good reason: it’s massive, and there are many separate events to check out once you make the short trip to the outskirts of Amsterdam.

The most popular tulip field is Keukenhof, a large flower garden and park located in Lisse, truly a sight to behold!

There’s nothing worse than arriving at a tourist destination — and having it crowded with other tourists.

With Renzy, you can whizz around the breathtaking flower fields at your own pace, bypass the tourists standing around, and head out on country roads for completely unobstructed, stretching views of the stunning flowers instead in a 100% electric-powered Renault Twizy.

A GPS guide and detailed maps will give you all the information you need in the privacy of your two-seater car. Getting cool facts about the tulips while feeling the breeze in your hair and enjoying the view? Hell yeah.

You can experience the magic of the Tulip Festival at over 85 locations throughout the Netherlands: in the public areas of Amsterdam, in the gardens of the city’s museums and hotels, and by notable buildings in the city centre as well as in various districts of Amsterdam.

All displays in public areas are free to enjoy, for some museum gardens, normal ticket prices apply.

Keukenhof Flower Parade

These festivities usually take place 30 minutes outside the centre of Amsterdam. The Keukenhof Flower Parade (“Bloemencorso Bollenstreek”) has floats adorned with arrangements of Hyacinths, daffodils, and of course, tulips.

But other than the capital, where else can you find tulips in the Netherlands?

Noordoostpolder: venturing out of Amsterdam

Noordoostpolder is a family favourite, there’s even a driving route you can take while you take in the view! There’s also a plucking field specifically for taking some keepsakes home with you.

This particular part of the country has Dutch agriculture at its heart. It houses the majority of tulip fields in the Netherlands, with over 1,000 hectares just dedicated to growing them.

You can reach the Noordoostpolder by car, being just over an hour’s drive from Amsterdam or Utrecht.

Zeeland aka “Zeeuws-Vlaanderen”

This is one for those who are looking for a nice day trip from Antwerp. The fields are a bit smaller, but they’re also closer together, meaning you’ll feel truly surrounded by tulips.

One of the lesser-known beauties of the Netherlands, these fields are for those that are looking to go off the beaten track — after all, a little adventure never hurt anyone.

The Bulb Region near Leiden

This is where most people go if they want to see tulips in the Netherlands. Heck, it’s the tulip fields where our video plays out:

The tulips of Noord Holland and West Friesland

There are a lot of tulip fields in North Holland, and why? The secret is in the soil.

You’ll be able to breathe in the fresh country air and clear your mind at Andijk, Enkhuizen or Bovenkarspel, with a huge array of tulip fields.

West Friesland rests at the top of Noord-Holland, you’ll have no trouble getting around. Kop van Noord-Holland can be reached by jumping on an inter-city train, it’s about an hour’s journey from Amsterdam.

Remember, some events are ticketed, so make sure to check the websites before making the trip. Now go forth, and smell the flowers!

Know any other spots to see the tulips in the Netherlands? Tell us in the comments below!

If you’re looking for the perfect uitje (outing) in Scheveningen, look no further! At SEA LIFE, you’ll have the opportunity to admire the magic of the oceans while learning all about the colourful creatures of the deep.

From feeding Piranhas to observing the cutest little otters, this place has something for everyone. With over 45 aquariums to explore, SEA LIFE is a great way to occupy the eyes, the mind, and, most importantly, the kids!

Ready to find out what the fun is all about? Let’s swap those clogs for swim fins, and dive right in! 🤿

From our local North Sea to the world’s oceans

Located right on the promenades of the stunning Scheveningen beach in The Hague, SEA LIFE is the place to be if you want to know all about the Netherlands’ local waters without even dipping in your toes.

Did you know, for example, that the Dutch part of the North Sea has an average depth of 30 metres? Its overall depth is about 90 metres, so that’s about as shallow as we’d expect from this beloved flat country!

The jellyfish at SEALIFE Scheveningen are mesmerising to look at! Image: DutchReview

As you make your way through the SEA LIFE building, you’ll move from the cold, dark North Sea, to the more tropical (and gorgeously colourful!) oceans of the world.

Here, you get the chance to spot a whole lot of real-life Nemos and Dorys and learn all there is to know about the coral reef. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can even touch an anemone with your bare hands in the rock pool! 🪸🐠

Take a walk through the Ocean Tunnel

The glorious Ocean Tunnel would have to be the highlight of SEA LIFE Scheveningen. This huge tank, filled with over 180,000 gallons of water, makes you feel like you’re walking at the bottom of the ocean (except it’s a lot less terrifying 😉).

The longer you look, the more fascinating hidden little (and not so little) sea creatures you’ll spot. Image: DutchReview

“The longer you look, the more you see,” a SEA LIFE employee told us when we visited, and inderdaad, we couldn’t help but be glued to the glass, captivated by all the creatures it contains!

From tiny critters crawling the bottom of the tank, to Ernie, the turtle who slowly glides over your head, this is the chance to observe ‘em all — even sharks!

If you’re curious to learn more about the variety of sea life you’re looking at, ask the staff. They’ll be more than happy to tell you all about the lovely inhabitants of the aquarium! 🦈

Get in on the action during feeding time

Okay, enough observing, time to get involved! How? By joining in on the feeding time of some of SEA LIFE’s creatures! This is a favourite among the kids. 🍽

An up-close encounter with the cutest tuxedo-wearing waddlers on the planet (penguins) and adorable otters? You betcha!

Watch as the staff treats them to a scrumptious feast while telling you about the animals’ quirks and behaviours. Zo schattig! 🐧🦦

If you or your kids are feeling fearless, dive into the world of piranhas (not literally, don’t worry) and experience the rush of feeding these razor-toothed fish!

Don’t worry, a sturdy glass wall safely separates them, AND they’re vegetarian, so you can unleash your inner adventurer without risking a nibble.

Can’t get enough of the action? The fun doesn’t have to stop at SEA LIFE! If you head just a few metres down the promenade, you’ll stand at the golden gates (or well, the legs of a giant LEGO Giraffe) of the all-Dutch LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre. 😍

If you combine the tickets to LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre and SEA LIFE, you’ll be able to save some cash, and be guaranteed a full day of family fun!

SEA LIFE’s commitment to our oceans

SEA LIFE is more than just a fun place to spend a few hours and look at fish. Committed to protecting the home of their inhabitants, SEA LIFE is making waves by protecting marine life and preserving our precious oceans.

Kids-learning-about-sea-creatures-in-aquariums-from-SEALIFE-Scheveningen-The-Hague-staff
The staff at SEALIFE in Scheveningen are pros and will teach kids all about sea animals and plants. Image: DutchReview

Of course, this means they’re committed to educating the next generation of ocean advocates too! In their enlightening exhibits, children learn not just to appreciate the ocean’s beauty, but also to respect it.

SEA LIFE also has fascinating projects, such as their ‘BREED, RESCUE, PROTECT’ programme. Their activity ranges from matchmaking sea turtles and seahorses, to rescue missions where they lend a helping fin to injured or stranded animals.

In this way, they want to ensure that our aquatic friends continue to swim, flip, and frolic for generations to come. 💙

Beat the crowds by going on a weekday

Ready to dip your toes into the fascinating world of SEA LIFE? We love to see it! If you want to make the most of your visit, visiting the aquariums on a weekday is recommended. Tickets can easily be purchased from the SEA LIFE website. 🦑

Cool-sea-shrimp-in-rocks-for-kids-to-see-at-SEALIFE-Scheveningen-The-Hague
From sea turtles, and seahorses, to shrimp and piranhas — there are endless different creatures to discover. Image: DutchReview

This allows you to get the most bang for your buck, as you get the chance to explore the aquariums on your own time and have the helpful staff all to yourself to ask all your burning questions.

The best part? If you combine your SEA LIFE visit with a trip to LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre, you can save some of your hard-earned Euros by making use of the combi-ticket deal. We don’t know about you, but we sure love a good korting.

What are you most excited to see at SEA LIFE in Scheveningen? Tell us in the comments!

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to leave the bikes and stroopwafels behind and step into the magical realm of Festival Circolo — the biggest circus festival in the Netherlands!

From 13 to 22 October, artists and performers from around the globe welcome you to their performances in Tilburg’s Spoorpark. Their goal? To make you fall in love with contemporary circus! 🎪

photo-of-artists-jumping-over-stage-at-circolo-festival-tilburg
The talented acrobats will have you holding your breath! 🫢 Image: Merk Tilburg

What exactly is Festival Circolo?

Festival Circolo is the largest festival for contemporary circus in the Netherlands. This year, the organisers are bringing you around 80 spectacular shows!

What is contemporary circus? Contemporary circus is the “love child of circus, theatre, dance, music, design, visual arts and everything that is fantasised about”. Forget about (mildly scary) clowns and sawdust — instead, contemporary circus tells a story, all while exploring the boundaries of the possible.

The festival hosts talented professionals to share with the audience what they’re most passionate about: circus!

There is a place for everyone at Festival Circolo: Whether you’re hearing impaired or not, visually impaired or not, able-bodied or disabled, 4 or 104 years old. The only requirement? You should be ready to fully immerse yourself in the magic. ✨

Breathtaking performances and much, much more

Of course, the main attraction at a circus festival will be the performances. These will take place across various tents in Tilburg’s stunning Spoorpark. Now, you might be thinking: “What’s the secret sauce that makes Festival Circolo so special?”

Well, it’s the incredible variety of shows that’ll have you grinning from ear to ear, holding your breath in suspense, or fighting to hold back tears (sometimes even at the same time!).

From jaw-dropping juggling acts to impressive handstand performances and touching stories, the performances at Festival Circolo will leave you wanting more. 🤩

But wait, there’s more than ‘just’ spectacular shows! Think workshops, lekkere food trucks, campfires, and playgrounds to keep the little ones entertained. We bet you won’t be bored!

What can I expect?

If you haven’t gathered by now, Festival Circolo has A LOT to offer. Let’s have a look at some of the programme highlights to get you excited!

To view the entire Festival Circolo programme, make sure to check out their website. 🤹

GLORIOUS BODIES by Circumstances / Piet Van Dycke

Glorious Bodies is “a search for strength in ageing bodies”, and let us tell you: it’s a truly heartwarming act.

The performance features six acrobats between the ages of 55 and 67, who explore the strengths and limitations of the ageing body — all while destroying the clichés that surround old age. We highly recommend it! 🧡

🎪 Performing on 18, 19, and 20 October at Spoorpark Icarus.

Do you want to be a part of the fun? At En Attendant le Grand Soir, you can! 🕺

During this dance spectacle, the acrobats showcase their jaw-dropping talents. Slowly but surely, they include the audience in their show and ultimately draw you into a whirlwind of dance and fun.

🎪 Performing on 14 and 15 October at Spoorpark Cirque Pardi.

RUNNERS by Hippana Maleta

This hilarious performance features three men, two treadmills, juggling balls and some live music. With their outstanding talent, the performers showcase just how impressive the human body can be.

And what about the treadmill, you ask? Well, it’s part of the show too! They play on it, create music with it, experiment, and, of course, fall on it. 🏃

🎪 Performing on 16 and 17 October at Spoorpark Icarus.

Festival Circolo is all about fun, diversity, and the spectacular art and effort behind circus.

If you have a free evening between 13 and 22 October, we hope to see you there!

Are you simply dying to network with people who share your dark humour? This year’s edition of The Most Infectious Festival will bring a fresh infestation of fun and games.

This disease-themed bash is brought to us by ImmunoWars, who are celebrating their third year in the game business.

This is the same start-up responsible for bringing us the strategic board game ImmunoWars, which tackles subjects like medicine, viruses and bacteria with both an educational and mind-bending morbidity. 💀

These people don’t shy away from death in card games (that are often won by wiping out opponents with plagues), and when it comes to partying, let’s just say they put the fun in funeral.

The time has come to unleash that inner mad scientist or demented nurse who’s just itching to come out of you; the dress code this year is “Black and White”, so festival guests will be sporting eerie lab coats in either colour for the occasion. 💉

Now we finally have an excuse to crank out any plague masks, gas masks, and other doctor’s equipment that’s been gathering dust in the cupboard all this time! Pass up on the chance to dress up? Over my dead body. ⚰

Forget going to raves; try dancing on graves

Not only that but between the gas masks and stethoscopes, you’ll be mingling with like-minded students, startups, designers, gamers, and researchers, who are all equally obsessed with wacky scientific innovations — some of whom could potentially offer you professional opportunities. 👀

Oh, and did we mention The Most Infectious Festival has its own Game Arena, as well as a Science Plaza full of snazzy scientific inventions where you can geek out to your heart’s content?

And, for those of us who are partial to having a boogie, you’ll be pleased to hear that a range of artists across two different music stages — Kiwi Club, Mau’s Acid Machine, Silicon Oxide, to name a few — are providing beats for your shimmying pleasure all evening. 💃

On top of that, there will be plenty of food trucks lined up to grant you enough succulent snacks for you to eat your heart out — alongside a wide variety of delicious drinks that are simply to die for. 🤤

Halloween has come early this year. Image: ImmunoWars

Considering the link to scientific research, it should come as no surprise that this day (and night) of games, music, and booze-filled festivities is taking place in Het Pesthuis, beside the Naturalis Biodiversity Center museum in Leiden.

Rain or shine, the venue accommodates all weather-related curveballs; it has a huge outdoor courtyard for you to soak up rays, as well as huge indoor spaces if you, well, don’t want to get soaked.

The festival is proving to be a popular one — all Early Bird tickets have been snatched up already, which means this event certainly won’t be a ghost town. 👻

That’s why you’ve got to book your tickets now to secure a spot before the big day. If you’re asking us, missing this blowout would be a fate worse than death. 😵

🗓 Date: Saturday, October 7
🕐 Time: 2 PM to 1 AM
📍 Location: Pesthuis Leiden, Pesthuislaan 7, 2333BA Leiden
🏷 Tickets: 2nd wave tickets are €18 (available until September 30), Late Bird tickets are €22 (available until the day of the festival), Very Infectious Person (VIP) tickets are €55 and come with a “special surprise”. 👀

A canal cruise in Amsterdam is an ideal way to see the city from a new perspective — and these five cruises really make it worth it.

Feeling light and breezy as you drift past actual traffic from your cosy canal view of beautiful Amsterdam is pretty much Dutchness defined.

Ready to hop aboard? Your Amsterdam canal cruise is waiting for you. 👩‍✈️

Is an Amsterdam canal cruise worth it?

Is it worth taking a traditional boat ride on the canals of beautiful Amsterdam? One thing we can say for sure: the city looks different from the water.

photo-of-amsterdam-canal-tourist-boat-near-bridge-with-canal-houses-in-background
Seeing the sights from the water just hits different. Image: Freepik

While you might dismiss these boats as a tourist activity — well, that’s technically true but it’s for a great reason.

Amsterdam is famous for its canals, and while you can view them from ashore, a gentle boat ride is an ideal way to scope out the majestic canal houses, iconic locals riding bikes, and beautiful urban nature lining the streets.

5 best Amsterdam canal cruises

Of course, there are plenty of options to choose from. If you want to choose the best canal cruise Amsterdam, consider the following five cruises.

1. Pancake Cruise Amsterdam

A pancake canal cruise in Amsterdam is a real treat for families and those who love sweet and savoury delights.

This family-friendly cruise combines the joy of sightseeing with the indulgence of freshly made Dutch pancakes. These fluffy pancakes are a beloved local delicacy you can enjoy as you glide through Amsterdam’s waterways.

The cruise route offers panoramic city views, including charming bridges and historic buildings.

Perfect for breakfast or lunch, this cruise ensures a fun-filled and delicious experience that will leave both adults and children with delightful memories of Amsterdam’s canals and their mouthwatering pancakes.

2. Wine & Cheese Cruise in Amsterdam

For those with a penchant for fine wines and gourmet cheeses, a wine and cheese cruise in Amsterdam offers an unforgettable evening of indulgence.

This cruise delights guests with a carefully curated selection of premium wines paired with an assortment of delectable cheeses.

As the boat glides along the water, guests can unwind and relish the tranquil ambience while enjoying the city’s illuminated beauty during the evening.

The knowledgeable staff onboard provide insights into the wine and cheese pairings, adding an educational element to the journey.

Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or simply wish to enjoy a refined experience, this cruise promises an elegant and delightful time on Amsterdam’s canals.

3. Evening Canal Cruise

For the more nocturnal among us, an evening canal cruise allows everyone to have a night on the town, but in a family-friendly tour on the water.

“The Venice of the North” is no stranger to bustling nighttime activities, and this cruise lets you witness the city in all of its nighttime glory but from the comfort of a cushioned boat.

Not only do you not have to wake up early, but you can seize the plentiful photo opportunities provided by “golden hour” lighting at sunset, before sitting back and relaxing Amsterdam’s sparkling lights after dark.

4. New York Pizza by LOVERS Cruise in Amsterdam

The New York Pizza by LOVERS Cruise in Amsterdam promises a delectable and unique dining experience on the iconic Amsterdam canals.

This cruise combines the best of two worlds, allowing passengers to savour delicious, freshly baked New York-style pizza while drifting along the picturesque waterways.

A pizza cruise not only treats visitors to breathtaking views of Amsterdam’s landmarks but also ensures a mouthwatering culinary journey.

With a relaxed and cosy atmosphere onboard, this cruise is an excellent choice for pizza lovers and anyone seeking a memorable dining experience on Amsterdam’s scenic canals.

5. Amsterdam Dinner Cruise

Want to dazzle a love interest or significant other with some fine wining and dining? Treat them to a romantic dinner cruise on the water in Amsterdam, which offers delicious, professionally prepared cuisine complete with classy drinks.

Whether you opt for a meat, fish, or vegetarian menu, your palate will not be disappointed.

Plus, there’s nothing like a bit of a Titanic movie atmosphere to charm the person sitting in front of you — especially while romantic music underscores your journey through Amsterdam’s popular sites and the evening sunset illuminates your loved-up faces.

Where do Amsterdam canal cruises depart?

Taking a boat trip around Amsterdam is easy. Many Amsterdam companies offer them, but some of the most famous are Stromma, Lovers Canal Cruises, Blue Boat Company, and International Holland Cruises.

Generally, the boats dock in front of Central Station, and you can choose the prettiest one from them.

But if you want to cruise Amsterdam’s canals from elsewhere in the city, that won’t be a problem either. You can bump into them at all the famous tourist spots — for example, in front of the Rijksmuseum or the Anne Frank House Museum.

What to expect on an Amsterdam canal cruise

Amsterdam canal cruises come in all shapes, sizes, durations, and more.

To start with, the boats come in different forms:

  • The most common are long, narrow boats with panoramic windows that offer a view on the sides and top. They are similar to buses from the inside, except that the seats are arranged in groups of four: two facing forward, two facing backwards, and a small table in between.
  • There are smaller boats, including open boats. They are the best way to see the sights along the canal banks but are best kept for a sunny day.
  • The best choice is a boat with a folding roof that can be adjusted to suit the weather.

The duration of excursions along the canals of Amsterdam is usually an hour and a half. Their itineraries do not vary too much and typically include the canals of Grachtengordel with sights that can be seen on their sides.

photo-of-typical-tourist-boat-moored-in-amsterdam-harbour
A typical tourist boat in Amsterdam. Image: Freepik

These tours usually focus on the Netherlands’ maritime past, its colonial policies, the East India Company, and the 17th century, a time of commercial prosperity and rapid expansion for Amsterdam.

If a regular boat trip is not enough for you, you can book a personalised guided tour or a combo tour, where a canal cruise will be combined with a museum visit or a walking tour.

Ready to jump aboard?

Exploring Amsterdam’s canals is an essential and unique experience that offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s history and architectural beauty.

Once vital for the city’s development, these waterways now serve as its main roads, providing an enchanting view of Amsterdam’s picturesque landscapes and captivating buildings.

Do you, like many in the Netherlands, partake in the devil’s lettuce 🤭? If yes, this 420-friendly cruise could really float your boat.

Glide gracefully through the city’s canals on a 22-person boat on this gentle guided tour underscored by the best “new wave” tunes, as you feel the literal waves beneath you (hah).

For as little as €25, you can reserve a flexible 60 minute ‘brown’ boat cruise with one complimentary drink, or a 70-minute bigger ‘blue’ boat cruise with two fresh complimentary drinks of your choosing.

Tired of having stoned conversations on strangers’ couches at 4 AM afterparties while covered in Dorito dust? Try getting zooted on board a ship in style instead, like the authentic pipe-smoking pot pirate you know you are inside. 🌱

So relax, unwind, and get toasty on a comfy, cushioned boat cruise as you drift through Amsterdam and stare, with intense awe and focus, at some of the city’s most famous landmarks — starting with the Red Light District. 👀

Can’t spell healthcare without THC, right?

Why should some light rain stand between you and some dope…dope? The boat’s windows can easily be sealed shut as well as open, and blunts won’t be the only things blazing — there’s roasted, heated seating to warm up your backside too. 🔥

Satan’s salad ship doesn’t discriminate; you can also just stick to cigarettes if you don’t want to feel left out. Plus, there is some purchasable hookah/shisha on offer once you climb aboard.

Please note, this reefer raft doesn’t include weed on-the-house, so do be sure to get high on your own supply — or, alternatively, pop in for a quick purchase at some of Amsterdam’s best coffee shops en route.

Now’s your chance, you’ve hit the jack…pot.

Get your friends on board and make a reservation before it sells out. Go on, live a little. 😶‍🌫️

Dutch cocktails? Yes please! So you think you can drink. But can you woo guests and their taste buds by making a sharp, savoury cocktail from scratch in your own home?

…Chances are, like most of us, you can’t. That’s just one of many reasons why you should try your hand at a professionally-taught cocktail-making workshop based in The Jungle Club Amsterdam.

Did you know that fresh lime and citrus juice are miles better than their bottled versions? Or that a coupe glass needs to be chilled first, so martinis don’t get warm?

Tips and tricks like these will all be under your belt after your 60 to 105-minute-long class.

Whether it’s to embark on a creative team-building activity, or simply turn your love of alcohol into a marketable hobby (some might argue, an art form), come along to this session to learn how to stir, shake, and drink with the prowess of any seasoned bartender.

This post might have affiliate links that help us write the articles you love, at no extra cost to you. Read our statement.

So profesh 💁‍♂️

Upon completion, you’ll be able to talk the talk as well as walk the walk; your mixologist teacher will give you a rundown of all the methodologies, origin stories, histories, anecdotes, and traditions behind each alcoholic concoction.

That way, if friends raise a dubious eyebrow watching you shake and stir away during the future cocktail party you host, you’ll be able to smoothly convince them you actually know what you’re talking about. 🧐

And though your expert tutor will show you the ropes when it comes to the classics (like piña coladas or margaritas), they’ll also take the backseat and let your imagination run wild.

By mixing and matching the available flavours — including coconut, chocolate, peach, and vanilla — you might even invent your own genius never-seen-before combination. What if the world even names a cocktail after you…😮

All necessary liquid courage and equipment will be available on-site at the cosy cocktail-mixing workshop.

Simply turn up with your hands and ears intact, ready to construct a cocktail that will soon become your go-to for recreating fancy drinks at home.

Is anyone else thirsty, or craving a pang of zesty lemon paired with the sweetness of a strawberry? It’s time to make a reservation and concoct some cold, juicy Strawberry-Lemon mojitos 🤤. If not now, when?

Looking for a fun afternoon with your friends and family? Maybe a bonding activity with colleagues, or just some good old video games to relax?

Say hello to Zero Latency VR, the latest cutting-edge tech company specialising in free-roam virtual reality gaming.

What exactly is Zero Latency VR about?

Zero Latency VR develops virtual reality systems with almost 60 branches across 26 countries — including a branch in Rotterdam and one in Amsterdam.

Zero Latency VR Rotterdam opened in 2020, and a branch in Amsterdam opened in July 2023. Here, participants can choose one of eight virtual reality worlds to join.

The technology at Zero Latency VR Rotterdam immerses players in a completely wireless setup. You won’t have to worry about getting tangled in your or another player’s cables while exploring the virtual world!

Each player is suited up with a pinpoint accurate controller and the world-changing virtual reality headset, equipped with crystal clear visuals and impeccable audio for easy communication with your team.

Up to eight players can freely walk around a huge space, and it really feels like you’re being transported into a different world — trust us.

Motion capture technology tracks the players’ physical location in the play area, which generates the virtual location of each player. No wonder it feels like the real deal!

You can create an account with Zero Latency VR, where you can put your gamer tag and email. If you want to visit again, whether that’s in the Netherlands or abroad, you’ll be able to log in with the same credentials and get all your previous game stats — neat!

Before virtual reality

Before you dive into the game, you may have some concerns — safety, etiquette, and staying grounded, for example. The Dutch branches have everything planned out to make sure you have the safest and most enjoyable experience!

Before each free-roam session, Zero Latency VR staff brief you with a handy video on everything you need to know. From putting on and taking off gear to avoiding collisions, and emergency situations, you’re always in capable hands!

Zero Latency VR has proximity sensors that give in-game warnings any time you are a little too close to another player or a wall — extra important when you’re walking around such a big space!

Immersive gaming at its finest

While you’re enjoying the experience, Zero Latency VR staff will take pictures of you and your friends, so the moment is forever captured without sacrificing immersion.

We at DutchReview got to try two virtual reality games offered by Zero Latency VR Rotterdam — Far Cry VR and Undead Arena, each one lasting around 30 minutes.

Far Cry VR: vacation turned hunting ground

This experience is a VR rendition of the popular video game franchise Far Cry. Equipped with nothing but teamwork, your wits, and a prop gun, you have to escape a tropical island while being hunted for sport by a group of malicious pirates and their leader, Vaas Montenegro.

Virtual-reality-rendering-of-far-cry-game-by-zero-latency-vr-nederland
Fast-paced action, high stakes, and awesome scenery! Who could resist? Image: Zero Latency VR/Supplied

You can explore this fantastical island all while engaging with unique scenery, exotic terrain, and intense shootouts for what feels like a whole day. The game has particularly impressive visuals and scenery, fully immersing players in the virtual world.

The gameplay is tense and exciting but not particularly scary — perfect for families with teens, groups of university friends, and even colleagues and coworkers!

Undead Arena: the post-apocalyptic gameshow

A lot less plot-heavy and a lot more trigger-happy, players compete as a team in the Undead Arena and see how well they can fend off waves of zombies.

You can trigger traps and move around an arena set up with moving platforms and realistic elevators. With a quick press of a button, you can even change the type of weapon you’re using — just in case you want to take out zombies with a crossbow, for example.

Test your targeting and teamwork with this adrenaline-inducing game! Image: Zero Latency VR/Supplied

Similarly to Far Cry VR, the gameplay is thrilling and lively but not so gory or scary for people who are squeamish (although, we can say, the excess adrenaline results in a lot of excited screaming and yelling).

If you’ve ever wondered what it was like to be in a first-person shooter game, these two games are the perfect match for you!

Virtual reality: perfect for any occasion

On the other hand, if cooperative first-person shooters aren’t your thing, no problem! Zero Latency VR Rotterdam offers six more games of different genres for one to eight players to enjoy:

  • Engineerium: a family-friendly VR scavenger hunt
  • Singularity: fighting robots in an awesome science fiction setting
  • Sol Raiders: a competitive player versus player shooter
  • Zombie Survival: defend your fort from zombies while waiting for help to arrive
  • Outbreak Origins: find a cure for a zombie virus while fending off the hoards
  • Mission Maybee: explore an enchanted forest and take down an evil scientist

Zero Latency VR Rotterdam only allows players aged 13+ to play their games due to the size and weight of the VR gear.

Apart from diverse genres and play styles, these virtual reality experiences make for a fun time with friends and family, but are also a great bonding and team-building activity, or a fun birthday or bachelor party!
