There are so many places to eat in Amsterdam that it’s enough to make you feel paralysed by choice. But geen probleem, we’ve narrowed the list down to 7 places you absolutely have to try.

These are some of Amsterdam’s most chill and hip restaurants that offer delicious food and amazing cocktails!

Also, know that different DutchReviewers went to different trendy places, so we got all our brains together to find the best places. Enjoy!

1. Ode aan de Amstel

The name “Ode aan de Amstel” translates to “ode to the Amstel” — it’s an homage to the river that flows into Amsterdam’s iconic canal ring and helps shape the city.

Both the terrace and the ground floor of this restaurant are located on the Amstel river (you can even dock your boat on the terrace!), letting you enjoy the peaceful sounds of the rippling water and a stunning view.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Ode aan de Amstel is all about providing guests with a peaceful dining experience. The intimate interior is complimented by an open kitchen and, of course, a menu that will leave your mouth watering.

If every single item on the menu sounds good to you (we feel you), we suggest going with the three, four, or five-course chef’s selection menu. This is a daily-changing menu with the chef’s most tasty, innovative and original dishes.

With only the best cuts of meat and the freshest seafood, this place truly left us wanting more.

2. Midtown Grill

An eclectic and excellent eating experience! Honestly, the prospect of eating at a steakhouse near Amsterdam’s Leidseplein wasn’t too exciting initially. But we were wrong!

When you walk into Midtown Grill, you immediately feel it won’t be your usual steakhouse experience. Its interior is showered in class, luxury, and eclectic wallpaper. (How often do you appreciate that in a place?)

The staff is courteous and never makes you think you’re eating out in Amsterdam — which is a compliment — and the menu is limited. Not 627 options, but what they did, they did well. (It had proper veggie options like any place should have nowadays.)

The steak we had was a proper beast. The staff shows you the cuts beforehand and advises on how you should want it prepped (a thick cut should be a bit medium, or else you’re just eating raw meat).

They also prepared a custom whisky sour, and we have to recommend the ‘mixed plankje and the lobster bitterballs’ (how can we not?)

📍 Address: Stadhouderskade 12, Amsterdam, NH 1054 ES

3. NOMADS

Look at that gorgeous colour scheme! Image: DutchReview/Supplied

Twice a year, NOMADS “travels” to a different location. Not only does the menu change to the country’s food but the interior design of the restaurant.

We visited when it was adorned with photographs of the streets of Alfama and typical blue tile murals in the bathroom — you guessed it, Portuguese cuisine.

We had a four-course meal, accompanied by a bottle of white Serras de Azeitão from Setúbal. Everything was great, particularly the octopus salad and the pastéis de bacalhau (or codfish pastries).

These are staple dishes in Portuguese culture, and we are glad they haven’t been forgotten. The oysters were the best part of the meal; they literally tasted like the sea.

Can it get much better than this? Image: DutchReview/Supplied

For dessert, we got a true Portuguese treat. THE pastel de nata that is so hard to replicate was by far the most authentic we’ve eaten outside of Portugal.

It couldn’t beat the original “Pastéis de Belém” as it follows an ancient recipe from the Jerónimos Monastery, but it would surely beat a lot of well-established bakeries in Portugal.

We also had a “rice pudding”, a take on the classic “arroz doce”. The pudding’s consistency and taste were perfect, which is hard to do with just milk and rice.

It’s usually topped with cinnamon, but the chefs at NOMADS innovated by adding raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries, as well as a fruit-infused foam.

It was a great experience. NOMADS made us feel like we were back in a mother’s kitchen in Lisbon.

4. In de Waag

When in Amsterdam, you truly can’t miss out on a meal at one of the city’s most iconic restaurants: In de Waag.

Located in an old city gate in the centre of the lively “Nieuwmarkt”, this place is a historic monument that was built between 1425 and 1488.

What a glorious exterior! Image: Lyna Meyrer/Supplied

What used to be a city gate eventually became a “weighing house” (Dutch: Waag, hence the name ⚖), and finally one of Amsterdam’s trendiest restaurants. 🙌

The rustic interior at the Waag is lit by more than 300 real candles, creating a romantic vibe that compliments the interesting history of this building. But besides the stunning interior, the Waag also sports one of Amsterdam’s sunniest terraces — perfect to enjoy during the warmer months of the year.

We stopped by Waag for lunch, and went for the famous Waag burger and the puffed aubergine. Both were fresh, full of flavour, and of course, heel lekker!

We don’t know about you, but we’re getting hungry just looking at this! Image: Lyna Meyrer/Supplied

For dessert, we were served the “Apple tarte tatin”, a small apple pie with cinnamon ice cream and vanilla custard.

Whether you come here for a mid-day snack or for a nice dinner, the selection of bites, main courses, desserts, and drinks won’t disappoint — and the lovely staff will make you feel right at home.

5. NENI Amsterdam

A sharing menu including the best falafel in town? Sign us up. We took a trip to NENI Amsterdam to try their new Balagan menu — and we weren’t disappointed.

Right next to the Olympic stadium in Amsterdam-Zuid, NENI‘s location might not be the first choice for tourists. However, it is worth the short journey outside of the centre.

As you enter, you’re greeted by the smell of fresh bread baking in the deli (well, only on the weekends). Here you can purchase freshly baked Mediterranean goods, including sourdough, babka, and challah. 🥐

The concept at NENI is that sharing is caring. There is a wide range of plant-based, fish, and meat dishes, ideal for when you are as indecisive as we are.

We had the Balagan menu, which offers a variety of their top dishes. The more people you have, the more dishes they add. You can ask for just vegetarian dishes.

It’s not the cheapest, coming in at €40 per person, but you get a lot of bang for your buck. For four people, we were completely stuffed — and happy about it.

All of the food was fresh and had a perfect balance of salt and spice. Our highlights were the caramelised aubergine and possibly the best falafel we’ve ever had. But there wasn’t a dud dish on the menu.

NENI has a great concept and food that’s packed with flavour in every bite. The sharing menu was a little on the pricey side, but you get a lot of food for the price you pay. Perfect for a special occasion or a stop-by for a deli lunch.

6. Kanarie Club

With plenty of seating in Food Hallen, you can bring as many friends to Kanarie Club as you like! Image: DutchReview/Supplied

The former tram depot in Amsterdam, known as “Food Hallen”, is where you’ll find one of Amsterdam’s most stylish hotspots.

The interior of the Kanarie Club’s design is made up of materials and colours inspired by the different industries housed in the hall. From woodwork and metalwork to painting.

It’s split up into different zones: a café where you can work, a cosy restaurant, and a beautiful cocktail bar. With film and food halls in the Kanarie Club’s backyard, this old tram depot in Oud-West is rightly one of Amsterdam’s most popular working spots.

We never thought we could enjoy a radish this much. Image: DutchReview/Supplied

The Kanarie Club isn’t just an ideal work spot for students, freelancers and those looking for a place to enjoy some quiet time or chill with friends and family.

The menu is extraordinary, the atmosphere is nice, the staff are cheerful, and the setting is as beautiful as expected.

Whether you’re there for breakfast, for flexible working, lunch, dinner, or just to drink cocktails: Kanarie Club remains one of Amsterdam’s best hotspots.

7. Bardak Amsterdam

Note: Bardak Amsterdam is temporarily closed in 2024, but will reopen its doors with delicious new food soon.

Bardark is a Tel Aviv-themed bar in Amsterdam, located in the ever-growing hip and cool area — de Pijp. It’s perfect for those nights when you want to go for some chill drinks but know you’re going to get hungry. It’s truly one of the best places to eat in Amsterdam!

The menu is pretty simple — everything you order will arrive on a tray with three sauces, street food style. The three sides are tahini, manjo, and chilli.

If you like meat and mint, treat yourself to the Arais kebab. It comes in a “flavour-soaked pita”, which is delicious.

If you want to go for something a little less fatty, then we’d advise getting the kebab from the grill, the rib-eye steak or their melt-in-the-mouth chicken liver. 😋

For the vegetarians out there, you’ve got to try the grilled okra. Quite rightly, it’s nicknamed the “Sexy Okra” by the head chef. There’s also a vegan mushroom shwarma, which comes with oyster mushrooms, sour cream, and a lovely warm pita.

The bar offers a unique range of some of the best cocktails in Amsterdam. We’d recommend the Solero Sour, the Chili Cucumber Margarita, and the Pink Lychee Martini.

As for desserts: while the Kanafeh was a beautiful mix of Kadaif pastry and goat cheese (with ricotta and honey), our favourite dessert had to be the Babka, AKA “Grandma’s Chocolate Roll”.

Tilburg’s TextielMuseum has done it again: the unique museum of textiles is bringing us another fascinating exhibit! “Is it alive?” can be seen between 14 October 2023 and 7 April 2024!

What’s this all about, you ask? The simple answer: life! But of course, there’s much more to it. Let’s check it out. 👇

Is what alive?

Before you screech in fear, don’t worry, this isn’t some display about scary critters and crawlies — the artwork isn’t actually alive. 😉

“Is it alive?” is shown at Tilburg’s unique TextielMuseum, which, as the name suggests, centres around the world of textiles. The exhibition showcases fascinating textile artworks which are inspired by the processes and movements of nature.

Photo of art installation "Is it alive?" in Tilburg exhibition at the TextileMuseum
Just look at this texture! Image: Morgan O’Donovan/TextielMuseum

One of the exhibit’s artists, Lonneke Gordijn from DRIFT, tells the curators that “if you look closely at how things in nature are constructed — it’s so complicated and so logical — it makes you wonder if nature is not the high-tech part in our world.”

It’s exactly this premise that’s at the heart of “Is it alive?”, which brings textiles to life with the use of fascinating modern technologies.

The result? A unique exhibition that combines innovation, textiles, technology and art. 🍃

I’m intrigued, tell me more!

Curious about what you can actually see during this exhibition? Let’s have a look at what awaits you.

The centrepiece of the exhibit is a piece called “I am Storm” by the artistic duo DRIFT, made up of Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta.

READ MORE | Dutch Quirk #13: be innovative (and not be shy about it)

This new installation is making its premiere during “Is it alive?”, and consists of some 20 larger-than-life-size stems that bounce in the imaginary wind. 🌬

On top of that, the TextielMuseum will showcase spectacular “living architecture” by Philip Beesley, interactive works by Bart Hess, and the impressive works of fashion designer Iris van Herpen, as well as Tanja Smeets.

More than art — dive into the research

The artworks displayed during the “Is it alive?” exhibit are not your average pieces of art.

In fact, there’s plenty of scientific research that went into them, and each piece is as innovative as it is fascinating.

READ MORE | 7 innovative Dutch projects for a sustainable future

Parts of the technique behind the “I am storm” installation, for example, are the result of intricate research conducted by the TextielMuseum’s very own textile lab.

A lot of time goes into each woven structure. Image: Tommy de Lange/TextielMuseum

Similarly, Philip Beesley’s prototype of the “Poietic Veil Tilburg” was created in collaboration with the renowned TU Delft. It’s the glorious result of the collaborative research effort between the artist and students from the university. Heel impressive!

Want to learn more about this unique making-of process? Dat kan!

Yup, “Is it alive?” not only showcases the artworks themselves but also takes visitors through their process of creation — “revealing that artists are sometimes inventors and can drive innovation”.

Curious to see this unique art exhibition yourself? Here’s all you need to know:

📍 Where? At the TextielMuseum, at Goirkestraat 96 in Tilburg.

⏰ When? From 14 October 2023 until 7 April 2024!

🔎 How? You can get your tickets online. 👩‍💻

We’ll see you there! 👋

What are you most excited to see at the TextielMuseum? Tell us in the comments!

Unlimited data SIM cards in the Netherlands: the ultimate guide https://dutchreview.com/reviews/unlimited-data-plans-mobile-phone-netherlands/ https://dutchreview.com/reviews/unlimited-data-plans-mobile-phone-netherlands/#respond Sat, 17 Feb 2024 07:00:27 +0000 https://dutchreview.com/?p=114673 Hoera, you’ve landed in the Netherlands, tried your first stroopwafel, and now you’re looking for the perfect unlimited data plan to power your mobile phone — and, ultimately, your new […]]]>

Hoera, you’ve landed in the Netherlands, tried your first stroopwafel, and now you’re looking for the perfect unlimited data plan to power your mobile phone — and, ultimately, your new lifestyle as an aspiring Dutchie.

However, looking for the perfect unlimited data plan isn’t as easy as eating boterkoek

First of all, unlimited data isn’t really unlimited. Then there are the fair use policies and the manual upgrades… basically, there’s a wealth of head-scratchingly confusing terms.

We’ve definitely been there, so geen stress, we’ve got something to help you through all the double Dutch: a guide to unlimited mobile data plans in the Netherlands. 🙌

This post might have affiliate links that help us write the articles you love, at no extra cost to you. Read our statement.

❓ What is an unlimited data plan?

An unlimited data plan is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin!

This is a mobile plan that (theoretically) lets you use as much internet data as you’d like, giving you far more freedom than a stereotypical data package.

a-picture-of-a-dutch-woman-talking-on-her-mobile-with-unlimited-data
Ok, the ‘unlimited’ data may not really be ‘unlimited’, but it’s more than enough to power your data needs! Image: Depositphotos

That means you can WhatsApp, surf the web, watch YouTube, or even send Tikkies as much as you like. They’re perfect if you don’t have a home internet subscription, too!

Why do these unlimited data plans seem to have limits?

Despite the name, many unlimited data plans in the Netherlands aren’t really ‘unlimited’ — you can’t hotspot an entire office, unfortunately.

Instead, mobile data is often capped at a certain amount between 10GB to 4GB per day, depending on your mobile data provider. Luckily, most providers will then let you grab free top-ups through a text message or an app!

The best unlimited data providers in the Netherlands

When it comes to unlimited data providers, the Netherlands has more choices than flavours of hagelslag at an Albert Heijn.

To make things a little easier for you to decide, here are the best unlimited data providers in the Netherlands!👇

✈ Best unlimited data SIM for those travelling Europe: KPN

screenshot-of-unlimited-data-plan-in-the-netherlands-kpn
Image: KPN

KPN is one of the largest phone companies in the Netherlands, and their unlimited data SIM does not disappoint. You’ll get excellent coverage, good service, and the benefit of being able to walk into a shop to buy your SIM card.

As someone who’s used KPN for around six years, this is my top unlimited SIM card pick if you’re planning on doing some jet-setting around EU countries. This means that you’ll be able to use your KPN SIM like you’re at home, with a 50GB monthly limit!

These benefits come at a slightly higher price point, with unlimited data packages starting at €25 if you have KPN home internet and a two-year subscription, going up to €35 for just the SIM card and no minimum contract length.

💰 Price: From €25 up to €35 per month

🌍 Best Dutch unlimited data SIM for people who stream videos: Vodafone

screenshot-of-unlimited-data-plan-in-the-netherlands-vodafone

Vodafone’s unlimited data pre-paid SIM option technically includes 10GB per day — but if you use that, it automatically gives you an extra 2GB and you can activate even more via their app (subject to fair use, of course 😉).

Combine that with their ultra-fast 5G internet, and you have a top combo for those who can’t miss the latest Selling Sunset or the current football match.

Going on holiday? No problem! Post all your vacation snaps with a lavish 40GB per month in the EU. Are you a Ziggo customer? Then you even get a discount!

The only downside: you need to commit to a 12-month or 24-month contract.

💰 Price: €32.50 per month

📱 Best Dutch SIM for people who want speed and coverage: Odido

screenshot-of-the-unlimited-basis-package-for-odido-data-provider
Image: Odido

Merging telecommunications heavyweights T-Mobile and Tele2, Odido is a solid choice for data lovers who want generous and blazing-fast subscriptions.

Boasting speeds of up to 300 Mb/s for an Unlimited Basis subscription, an Unlimited Premium package kicks things up several notches to 1 Gb/s. That’s nearly ten times as fast as the average internet speed in the Netherlands! 😱

Oké, but what if you need to make some calls? Unlike other providers that cap your minutes, with Odido, you can enjoy unlimited calls throughout the EU. You’ll also get 35GB of data, messages, and calling time to use within the EU so that you’re always connected — no matter whether you’re on the road or chilling at home.

Again, however, this option is for those of us who plan on staying long-term: the minimum contract is one year.

💰 Price: €32.50 per month

💰 Cheapest unlimited data SIM card in the Netherlands: Budget Mobiel

Image: Budget Mobiel

Dedicated to giving you unlimited data at an affordable price, Budget Mobiel is a great option if you love surfing the net, but also want to watch your wallet.

Of course, with savings like these, there are some things you have to give up. The daily bundle maxes out at 4GB (but you can add extra 1 GB packages for free), there’s a speed limit of 5 MBp/s, there’s no 5G, no e-SIM, and you only have 17 GB of data to use in the EU.

In saying that, our editors swear by BudgetMobiel: it’s cheap, works brilliantly, and the online customer service is decent!

💰 Price: €20 per month

Things to consider before getting an unlimited data plan in the Netherlands

As with any data plan, there are a few things to mull over before you whip out your debit card and plonk down €30 per month.

The fair-use policy

Most mobile data providers have a fair use policy that dictates the terms under which they’re providing you unlimited data.

READ MORE | 5 reasons why a SIM-only subscription is the best choice for internationals in the NL

This is intended to ensure that consumers do not use the service for things it’s not intended for, which generally includes:

  • using the mobile data plan as a replacement for a fixed internet connection
  • using large amounts of mobile data ( for example, to stream films over Netflix)

In order to calculate the amount of data that may reasonably fall under “fair use”, data providers look at the average consumption of mobile data per person per day in the Netherlands.

There are manual upgrades for unlimited data plans

If you’re a heavy data user like me, I’ve found that a great way of extending your data plan is by requesting manual upgrades of 1GB, 2GB, or higher.

This means that if you’ve almost used up your daily data allowance, you won’t be left stranded with no mobile data.

READ MORE | 12 of the best apps to have as an international in the Netherlands

As the daily data allowance resets each day, you’ll only need to shell out for upgrades on days when you have the heaviest data usage.

Unlimited data plans in the Netherlands and travelling abroad

Well, unlimited data is all fine and dandy, but I’m sure you’re dying to find out what happens to your Dutch data package when you travel.

READ MORE | 17 places you can get to by TRAIN from the Netherlands

Worry no longer, because we’re here to answer your burning questions. 🙌

Can I use my unlimited data outside of the Netherlands?

Maybe you have a romantic weekend planned in Italy, and you’re wondering if your unlimited data package will help you upload some super #leuk pictures to the ‘gram? 📸

photograph-of-a-man-scrolling-on-his-mobile-phone-with-unlimited-data-whilst-at-the-beach
Vacations are fabulous, and you deserve the data to enjoy them. Image: Freepik

Blame it on EU regulations, but you likely won’t have access to the entirety of your unlimited data package whilst abroad.

Most data providers in the Netherlands will allow you to use a large bundle of data known as a roaming allowance. Any data usage over this, unfortunately, you’ll need to pay extra for.

Will my unlimited data work outside of the EU?

If you’ve decided on a thrilling vacation outside of the EU, and have your bags packed for Iceland, Norway, or Liechtenstein, you’ll still have access to much of your data package.

This is because these countries are in the EEA (European Economic Area), and can also enjoy “roam like at home” privileges.

photograph-of-a-woman-scrolling-on-her-phone-whilst-on-vacation
The pros: your vacay will probably be a blast. The cons: you won’t have access to your Dutch unlimited data plan. Image: Freepik

That tropical vacay to Bali, on the other hand?

The drinks may be flowing and the waters may be stunningly blue, but you’ll likely need to splurge on a roaming package. 🏝

Let op! If you go over the EU data limits, your internet speed may be reduced. This means that while you’ll still be connected to the web, your loading time will take a hit.

Having read the whats, whys, and hows of unlimited data in the Netherlands, we hope you feel you can now make the best choice for you and your phone. 🙌

Whether you’re looking to escape the cold, want to learn about African culture, or doing research for your African Studies major — it’s time to head over to Wereldmuseum Leiden!

Why? The Leiden-based ethnology museum has unveiled “In Brilliant Light”, a spectacular new exhibit focusing on African art, culture and history.

With “In Brilliant Light”, curators have created a platform for artists from Africa and its diaspora. The space lets visitors immerse themselves in the richness of African cultures — right in the heart of Leiden.

👋 Welkom to Wereldmuseum Leiden

Wereldmuseum Leiden, formerly known as Museum Volkenkunde, is the place to be for all things ethnology, anthropology, and world cultures. It’s definitely a must-see when you visit the city.

As the pros in all things ethnology, you can be sure that “In Brilliant Light” will be nothing short of, well, brilliant!

Oh, and the best part? Entrance is free for children between 0 and 5 and museum card holders, and reduced for students.

🌍 African art ‘in brilliant light’

So, what exactly is “In Brilliant Light” about? Just like African art, the exhibition is diverse, rich, and culturally significant.

Press-photo-of-artworks-at-wereldmuseum-leiden-in-brilliant-light-exhibition
Image: Aad Hoogendoorn/Supplied

The exhibit guides you through eight different sections containing breathtaking artworks that reflect on the heritage of their artists and the world around them.

It features not only a whopping 32 artists from Africa and its diaspora, but also does a wonderful job of shedding light on both historical and contemporary events that influence African culture and society.

Themes addressed include post-colonialism, power, globalisation, change, emancipation and spirituality.

From Africa to the diaspora

The talented artists featured in “In Brilliant Light” reflect on their African homeland and their — voluntary or involuntary — movement away from it.

Their art showcases the diverse cultures, histories, and traditions that are native to the African continent and its people while simultaneously illustrating what connects them with the rest of the world.

Press-photo-of-artworks-at-wereldmuseum-leiden-in-brilliant-light-exhibition
Image: Aad Hoogendoorn/Supplied

As a consequence of the African diaspora, we recognise common themes, influences, and even materials that spread across the artworks.

Unique forms of artistic traditions that range from tapestry weaving to woodcarving are showcased as artists draw inspiration from their countries’ history, heritage, folklore and spiritual traditions and share them with the world.

Relating to cultural history

While “In Brilliant Light” displays contemporary art, the exhibition also reflects on the rich and sometimes very complex African cultural history.

Colonialism, which undoubtedly had a very significant influence on African culture, is a theme that is omnipresent in “In Brilliant Light”.

Press-photo-of-artwork-at-wereldmuseum-leiden-in-brilliant-light-exhibition
Image: Aad Hoogendoorn/Supplied

One thing that many African people share, regardless of whether they are on the continent or not, is a sense of identity loss — finding themselves stuck between their strong cultural ties and their projected future.

This is addressed in one of the exhibition’s central artworks.

Press-photo-of-artwork-at-wereldmuseum-leiden-in-brilliant-light-exhibition
Image: Aad Hoogendoorn/Supplied

Johnson Eziefula’s “Birth of the Self” was created specifically for “In Brilliant Light” and depicts a young man standing at a crossroads, realising that, depending on the path he chooses, his life will change drastically.

Creating new perspectives

One sign in the exhibition reads: “In the 1950s and 1960s, almost all African countries [became] independent, [and] African artists emerge[d] as important agents of change.”

Transformation is another major theme addressed in “In Brilliant Light”, illustrating how artists use their craft to reshape history and claim their heritage through their artistic expression.

Press-photo-of-artworks-at-wereldmuseum-leiden-in-brilliant-light-exhibition
Image: Aad Hoogendoorn/Supplied

Inspiration is often found in the idea of new worlds and shared dreams for a new society.

With this, art becomes a form of emancipation, allowing artists to develop a new cultural identity, new perspectives, and new visions in a post-colonial world.

Finding the best coffeeshops in Rotterdam is not an easy feat — after all, the city has over 40 different coffeeshops to choose from!

If you’re dedicated to becoming a regular at one of Rotterdam’s finest weed shops, look no further: these 11 places serve some of the finest herbs the Dutch port city has to offer.

1. Coffeeshop The Reef: Dive in and get high

This underwater-themed coffeeshop in Rotterdam is the perfect place to ride the wave of a good high. The Reef sells a great variety of indica, sativa, and hybrids and offers its visitors a cosy smoking lounge with soft drinks and teas. 🫧

What we love about The Reef is its attention to the finer details. From the funky interior to the chillest beats playing over the stereo down to the friendly bouncers at the door, it’s an undeniably great place to go.

📍 Location: Oppert 1, 3011 HS Rotterdam
⏰ Opening times: Daily from 10 AM until midnight
💸 Payment options: Cash or card

2. Coffeeshop ‘t Trefpunt: Central Rotterdam’s finest

And no, just because their cannabis is organic, it doesn’t mean there’s any less of a selection. Hoera!

However, one thing this place does lack is a smoking room, so keep in mind that you’ll need to smoke up elsewhere.

Mon Camarade has been a Rotterdam staple for more than 20 years. Nestled right in Rotterdam’s centre, this coffeeshop is just a 15-minute walk away from the Stadhuis (city hall).

Coffeeshop Bellamy recently ditched the dingy neon look and replaced it with a clean and classy interior — perfect if your mum wants to tag along for some ganja!

We know, we know: the interior isn’t all that counts when it comes to coffeeshops — especially because this one doesn’t let you stick around to smoke.

But worry not, because Bellamy also boasts great weed, hash, and spacecakes (otherwise, it wouldn’t be on our list of “best coffeeshops in Rotterdam” 😉).

The Dutch can be a pretty laid-back bunch when it comes to things like drinking alcohol or enjoying the good ‘ol joint. But smoking weed and drinking alcohol at the same time? No way, José!

Little did you know: selling alcohol and weed over the same counter is actually forbidden in Amsterdam coffeeshops, bars, and cafés!

But does that mean you need to wave goodbye to smoking and drinking Amsterdam-style? Nope. If you want to enjoy both a joint and a beer, you’ve got to go to a true Amsterdam smokers’ bar. 😎

An Amsterdam smokers’ bar is a place where you can bring your own weed (from one of the many Amsterdam coffeeshops nearby), smoke it pure, AND enjoy a nice alcoholic beverage. Wat leuk! (How nice!)

And you lucky duck! As a seasoned international in the Netherlands, I know exactly the right places to go, let’s get into it.

READ MORE | Is smoking weed in Amsterdam legal? (+ 5 best coffeeshops!)

Why can’t you smoke weed and drink alcohol in Amsterdam bars?

Fun fact: you didn’t always have to go to specific smoker-friendly bars to enjoy weed and alcohol at the same time. 🤫

Once upon a time, Amsterdam coffeeshops prided themselves on providing their customers with both smoke and spirits.

READ MORE │ The do’s and don’ts of smoking weed in Amsterdam

However, in 2008, the villain enters the story: the Dutch government enforced a law that enticed 750 coffeeshops all over the country to choose between selling cannabis or alcohol.

Good to know: Since 2008, the Netherlands has had a strict ban on smoking tobacco inside. This means that you can’t smoke a cigarette or mixed tobacco-weed joint legally in any public indoor spaces, including Amsterdam coffeeshops. 🚭

But, if you are the kind of person who would love to down some liquid courage and enjoy some of the finest greens the Netherlands has to offer — I have a happy ending for you: Amsterdam’s smoker-friendly bars.

In February 2023, Amsterdam also announced a ban on smoking weed (blowverbod) in certain parts of the city centre. This means you can’t smoke weed outdoors in some of the most central areas of Amsterdam, namely: de Wallen (the Red Light District), the Dam, the Damrak, and the Nieuwmarkt. 🚭

Top 7 smoker-friendly bars in Amsterdam

So where can you enjoy your smoky greens while downing a beer at the same time? Buckle your seatbelts, boys and girls; it’s going to be a wild night. 💃

Here are my top seven places in Amsterdam where you can pair a beer and a bud.

1. CoffeeshopAmsterdam Café: cocktails and gezelligheid

Empty-upstairs-area-of-smokers-bar-Amsterdam-café
A good look at the cosy upstairs area of CoffeeshopAmsterdam Café. Image: Supplied

CoffeeshopAmsterdam has it all: a location very close to Amsterdam Centraal, uber-gezellige vibes and an absolutely stunning drinks menu. (I’d recommend checking out their cocktails!🍹)

What’s also great about this boutique-style smokers’ bar is that it isn’t dark and hidden away from the public. Instead, it’s bright, open and accessible.

And let’s not forget the best part: it’s smoker-friendly! While you can’t actually buy weed here, you can bring your own (tobacco-free) joints to this smoker-friendly bar and puff away over one of their delicious milkshakes.

The downstairs area is also really well-ventilated. Perfect for those amongst us who don’t want to smell like a walking cannabis bud after a couple of hours in the smoker’s lounge. 💨

📌 Where: Singel 8, 1013 GA, Amsterdam
⏰ Opening times: Daily from 10 AM until 1 AM

2. Hunter’s Bar: for a laid-back vibe

If you’re short on time and want to hit a coffeeshop and a bar in close proximity, I suggest you head over to Hunter’s. Located just across the street from the famous Boerejongens Coffeeshop, Hunter’s really has no choice but to be smokers-friendly.

In fact, Hunter’s is a chain of coffeeshops that holds two smokers’ bars and six coffeeshops across Amsterdam, Zandvoort and Haarlem.

This particular spot is centrally located, you can get a nice fresh beer off the tab, and Rembrandtplein is just around the corner. What’s not to love?

📌 Where: Utrechtsestraat 18, 1017 VN, Amsterdam
⏰ Opening times: Monday through Sunday: 9 PM until 1 AM

3. Café Hill Street Blues: for grungy canalside views

Do you like your alternative and underground venues a little rough around the edges? Then if you ask me, you should head to Café Hill Street Blues for a chill joint and a beer.

This venue wears its down-and-dirty looks with pride: graffiti, second-hand furniture and stickers everywhere. The best part? No one will raise an eyebrow if you want to add a scribble or two yourself.

And it’s loads of fun! You may just be lucky enough to catch one of their music evenings.

Plus, it’s located in Amsterdam’s Red Light District — so if you’re here as a tourist you can check a few things off your list at once.

📌 Where: Warmoesstraat 52A, 1012 JG, Amsterdam
⏰ Opening times: Sunday through Thursday: 12 PM until 1 AM

4. Lost in Amsterdam: the OG smokers’ bar

Here it is, the very first of Amsterdam’s smoker-friendly bars! Lost in Amsterdam opened its doors more than 15 years ago and has been going strong ever since.

Pure cannabis smoking is permitted, and you can combine it with a huge menu of delicious cocktails and water pipes. Their milkshakes have also made quite a name for themselves. 🥤

An added plus is the interior. Lost in Amsterdam is 100% cosy. Their smoking lounge sports Moroccan-style couches for maximum comfort and that extra relaxing holiday feeling.

📌 Where: Nieuwendijk 19a, 1012 LZ, Amsterdam
⏰ Opening times: Sunday through Thursday: 10 AM until 1 AM;
Friday and Saturday: 10 AM until 3 AM

5. Barney’s Uptown: smoke it up in class

Fresh off the train from Schiphol? Just a swift five-minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal, and you’ll be hanging at Barney’s Uptown — a smokers’ bar with a true rock-n-roll flare, DJs, and live music.

These guys will serve you full meals and have a cocktail menu to be remembered by. For ultimate convenience, there is a coffeeshop right across the road where you can buy can refill your stocks as needed. 😮‍💨

📌 Where: Haarlemmerstraat 105, 1013 EW, Amsterdam
⏰ Opening times: Sunday through Thursday: 10.30 AM until 1 AM;
Friday and Saturday: 10 AM until 3 AM

6. Cafe Pollux: where life is a party

Café Pollux is a funky café in Amsterdam’s city centre, boasting an extensive menu of lekkere gins, beers, and whiskeys. 🍻

Located a 5-minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal, this is the place to be on a long night out, giving you the guarantee that you’ll always catch your last train home (though you might not want to leave 😉).

But wait, there is much more to Café Pollux than just that. Of course, it’s also one of Amsterdam’s best smokers’ bars, where you can light up as long as you bring your own herbs.

📌 Where: Prins Hendrikkade 121, Amsterdam, Netherlands
⏰ Opening times: Closed on Mondays; Tuesday through Thursday: 2 PM until 3 AM;
Friday and Saturday: 12 PM until 4 AM; Sunday: 12 PM until 3 AM

7. La Grotte: funky interior for a great trip

When they were forced to choose between becoming a coffeeshop or a bar, La Grotte went for the latter. Now, it’s one of the funkier smokers’ bars where you can take your goods and light up! 🔥

Even if you’re not planning on getting high, the purple-green light play and otherworldly interior will offer you a psychedelic experience nonetheless.

What’s more, they also have a mouthwatering range of drinks to quench that dry mouth. It’s definitely worth a visit!

📌 Where: Haarlemmerstraat 34, 1013 ES, Amsterdam
⏰ Opening times: Monday-Sunday, 10 AM to 1 AM.

Looking for a great place to eat in The Hague? The political capital of the Netherlands has a buzzing culinary scene, with great options for everything from breakfast to cocktails.

So without further ado, let’s get started with our top 7 places to eat in The Hague.

1. Restaurant ñ: Spanish nights with amazing food

Just a few streets from the Grote Markt and the Grote Kerk in the centre of The Hague, you can find the atmospheric Restaurant ñ.

This Spanish-themed hidden gem in The Hague serves some amazing food for some very good prices.

The atmosphere on the terrace gave a romantic, vacation-like feel, with the fairy lights and greenery.

But the atmosphere wasn’t the only thing impressing us this late summer evening. This place boasts an amazing tapas-like menu, which also changes quite often, and all of the entries were sensational.

The wines were very nicely paired with the dishes, and the dishes themselves were neatly priced (between €6 and €13, an absolute steal).

The night was perfect, thanks to the young and talented chef Thomas Vandenhecke who’s doing some amazing work there.

2. Vincenzo’s: an Italian dream

Located in the trendy and warm district of Zeeheldenkwartier, you’ll find this pearl of an Italian restaurant — Vincenzo’s.

First of all: they use cognac to flambee tagliatelle with truffle in a block of giant parmesan cheese. That’s really all you need to know.

Vincenzo’s has a lovely inviting entrance. Image: DutchReview

I’m always a bit sceptical of Italian restaurants in the Netherlands after my own expat time in Italy. But I heard Vincenzo’s was good, even great and did things differently.

Vincenzo’s started us off with Oysters and Carpaccio. The carpaccio was accompanied by nuts, and all the oysters had different flavours added to them. Enough to make anyone smile, really.

Next up was the showpiece of Vincenzo’s; their Pappardelle al Parmigiano, with black winter truffle. The large Parmigiano is roasted at the top, causing the cheese to melt, before the fresh pasta is stirred in the cheese itself.

Now THAT’S what we call cheese! Image: DutchReview

After the fresh truffle was added, it tasted just as epic as you would expect. Rest assured, you can order half portions, in case you want to be able to try more of the pasta on the menu.

3. Botanica: for the love of veggies

Botanica is located in the newly renovated Voco Hotel, but it is far more than a hotel restaurant. The sleek interior creates a delicate yet down-to-earth atmosphere — with a menu that matches this vibe perfectly.

It’s giving classy and hippie at the same time. Image: DutchReview

Centred around Dutch cuisine, Botanica is a great spot for those seeking an authentic Dutch food experience without having to eat 9 different varieties of fried snack-bar bites.

What makes Botanica extra unique is its twist on the traditional: at least 80% of all its dishes consist of vegetables, and all vegetables are seasonal. I’s a vegetarian’s dream!

A lovely summer salad for the vegetarian and fresh mackerel for the meat-eater. Image: DutchReview

We started the five-course evening with a delicate summer salad and fresh grilled macarel before continuing with a robust beetroot dish and lovely fowl. All courses were paired wonderfully with unique wines from all across the world.

The frozen yoghurt with pumpkin and mandarin sauce was a perfect ending to what can only be described as a love letter to Dutch cuisine — and vegetables!

4. STAN: late-night dinner and drinks

STAN has become a household name across the Netherlands, and the Amsterdam branch recently opened its doors in Buitenhof, The Hague.

This place somehow makes a neon sign feel warm and cosy. Image: DutchReview

Their menu has a nice and trendy set-up of fusion-like dishes, following all the latest culinary trends (as you’d expect).

We started off with some delicate appetizers on a wooden platter, matched with some extra gyoza. Apart from the tasty gyoza, a highlight from the board was the smoked Duck breast.

Moving on to the main, STAN is working with the famed Josper Grill. They’ve got a bunch of amazing meaty options, and when you go for the chef’s special, you can taste them all.

STAN surprised us with delicious food from across the globe for decent prices with a dynamic yet intimate atmosphere.

5. Hotel Des Indes: a grand food experience

Hotel Des Indes might just be the grandest hotel in the Netherlands, and it’s certainly the most exclusive entry in this article. If you ever want to treat your loved one to something special in The Hague, this is your go-to spot.

You won’t be surprised that this is a hotspot for the diplomatic community and has seen quite its share of heads of state visiting. The service is almost un-Dutch as well, and I mean that in a positive way — very hospitable and polite.

photo-of-interior-of-hotel-des-indes-restaurant-the-hague
It’s no less impressive from the inside! Image: DutchReview

It’s fancy for sure, but Des Indes also has affordable arrangements for lunch, dinner and high tea. We sat down for a sumptuous lunch.

There were gratinated oysters, steak with foie gras and truffle, wine-pairing and delicious sweet treats at the end of it all.

Lunch, dinner, cocktails, or loads of art — Gallery 61 in the centre of The Hague has a lot to offer, and there are surprises everywhere.

First of all, they invested a lot in the artwork on their walls — you can easily spend 15 minutes just checking out the art while waiting for your starter to arrive.

You can also get tricked by this magic chair painting:

An optical illusion Escher would be impressed by. Image: DutchReview

The menu also surprises you with all kinds of fancy versions of the street food you know and love. The hot dog is especially worthy of a shout-out, but the burger was also a great way to go. I still have plans to return and try their ‘cheeky pork’ or ‘what the duck’.

It’s any grown-up’s dream to be allowed to eat street food in a fancy restaurant, isn’t it? Image: DutchReview

As you can see, the dishes are original and colourful. The cocktails were all done just like they should be. The music, cutlery, and a boatload of art on the walls all came together in a well-thought-out concept.

7. Haley’s Comet Breakfast Club: for throwback Thursdays

Haley’s Comet Breakfast Club is a lot more than an all-day breakfast place and quite the 80s experience. As soon as you walk in, you can’t help but feel the retro atmosphere and notice all the old-school decor in the room.

Even from the outside, we’re sent right back to the 80s! Image: DutchReview

Aside from having an amazing theme, Haley’s Comet Breakfastclub also has a distinctly homey menu. We tried the lovely soft scramble eggs in a brioche bun and the breakfast muffin (all home-baked!).

We also had a Nesquik hot chocolate (the nostalgia hit us hard) and their special brewed coffee (which they also sell in packs, in case you absolutely fall in love with it).

So simple, yet so perfect. Image: DutchReview

The place also has an open bar and kitchen, so you can see everything happening right in front of you, just like home!

To ensure that people see her breakfast club as a second home, Britt organizes events (like board game nights and pyjama parties) every month.

So, if you’re new to The Hague and in need of a fun community, you can always feel welcome at Haley’s Comet Breakfast Club.

Wondering where to eat in Rotterdam? Looking for a trendy hipster place? A gourmet experience? Or just want to enjoy some fine BBQ in Rotterdam?

Well, buckle up (or better yet, buckles off) and join us on our trip to 13 delicious dinner spots in Rotterdam.

From Afghan cuisine to vegetarian paradise, Rotterdam has it all.

1. Morgan and Mees

Just this summer, this classy hotel and restaurant opened up in the Mathenesserlaan, a short walk from the mesmerizing Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen.

They’ve got a nice terrace, so it’s suitable for summer dinners — but if you have the choice, check out the open kitchen!

Two dishes were a feast for the eyes (and tastebuds joined the party too), and in this case, I’ll let the picture do the talking for the burrata and ceviche.

2. By Ami: Urban Bistro

By Ami is the brainchild of Ahmed Baglari (Ami for friends). He has 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry under his belt. So when this much-wanted spot opened up at the Kop van Zuid he jumped on it.

3. Panzerò

If you want to combine comfort and delicacy, go some authentic Pugliese food made by Italian chefs at Panzerò!

Located near Rotterdam Blaak Station, the restaurant is very cosy and offers some amazing dishes that you won’t find at your regular ol’ Italian eatery.

We started with appetizers of burrata, tomatoes, and olives and tasty Aperol Spritz and Limoncello cocktails to go with the food. Cheers! 🥂

We were spoiled when the main dishes came to our table: Panzerotti, Polposition, and Parmigiana! The panzerotti came with fresh bread, which was baked to perfection. The polposition was also a great pick for all the seafood lovers out there. 🐙

Did we mention this place is also suitable for vegetarians? The Parmigiana, filled with eggplant and layered with fresh tomato sauce, was my friend’s favourite! 🥘

After indulging in all that cuisine, we got the sweet pistachio puff pastry bun, the chocolate and pistachio lava cake, and even our dessert stomachs were satiated by the end of the night!

4. Pesca

Pesca had been making a name for itself in Amsterdam. People flocked to the new concept of a live fish auction where you get to pick your fish food before it gets served to you. Their new Rotterdam location is no different: creative concept, playful atmosphere, and of course, delicious seafood!

Luxury touches, classy interiors, a ginormous fully stocked bar and funky music, set the scene for a night out in the theatre of fish.

When your sardine case number (it will make sense when you’re there) is up, you can have your pickings at the fish auction.

Prices are on display, and the upbeat Pesca staff happily presents you with all the possible options for three rounds of seafood: cold, warm and big complete fish. After selecting all that, it’s time to pick your wine!

It all comes together for a fun night out, some real winners among our choices were the oysters, the scallops and definitely the turbot in butter sauce.

5. Atithi Restaurant

Since the summer of 2023, Atithi has boasted a new spectacular interior and reinvigorated menu.

That ceiling! Image: Abuzer van Leeuwen

The staff is super friendly and speaks exclusively English and the place was packed with Dutchies and internationals (and Indian people, always a good sign).

They’re bringing an extensive menu to the figurative and literal table, and what stood out immediately was the GINORMOUS selection of vegetarian and vegan options. Three things caught our eye especially:

  • The paneer: This young, marinated Indian cheese was very smooth, making it a nice starter
  • The butter chicken: Can’t go wrong with this classic, and they certainly got it right
  • The Josh Rogan Lamb: My favourite of the night: a must-have!
The food is also really pretty and colourful, and that’s always a good thing! Image: Abuzer van Leeuwen

It was moderately priced and not that spicy at all! (but I’m sure they can accommodate awesome levels of spiciness). There’s also a terrace there if you want to dine outside in the summertime!

6. MAAS

Sometimes a fancy name might just cover up what you’re in for when you’re visiting a restaurant. Rotterdammers are straight talkers and get to the point — even more than other Dutchies. And what you read is what you get right here: unlimited gorgeous views of the Maas!

Sunset-over-the-maas-river-in-rotterdam-the-netherlands
How could you say no to a view like this? Image: DutchReview

We visited MAAS on a chilly March evening and the views were to die for. The skyline basking in the sunset, Rotterdam’s water taxis speeding past, and the big ships passing by — all good entertainment and MAAS’ terrace in the summer is surely a must-do.

They’ve got a solid and affordable menu with a couple of items that I can recommend.

As the main course, they had a Latin-American sharing platter (which was a tower). The empanadas stood out — made in-house and crispier than a certain fried chicken joint.

Not all food is Instagram-worthy, but we can certainly say this food tower is. Image: DutchReview

And of course, dinner is incomplete without a dessert: the butter cheesecake was off-the-charts delicious — you definitely don’t want to miss out on this one.

They’ve also got a nice menu of local Rotterdam craft beers to choose from; the ‘Je Moeder’ (Your Mother) was both funny and delicious. So plenty to enjoy while you’re “sitting on the dock of the bay, watchin’ the tide roll away”.

7. Restaurant KITE

Being a fussy eater, I was intrigued about trying Afghan food, and it did not disappoint. We rocked up and found restaurant KITE near Witte de With, the life and soul of Rotterdam.

When we arrived we had a set menu, which was perfect for two people who were completely new to the cuisine (but don’t worry, on the menu you can pick whatever you want!).

We started with a delicious crispy samosa, along with a steamed dumpling that had an onion-mince filling and covered with a sauce of tomatoes and split peas. Yeah… it really did taste as good as it sounds and looks.

Next came lots of different dishes to try, which included curries, meatballs ‘kofta’, fried eggplant ‘banjan’, and potatoes in a tomato and garlic sauce, all with white and brown rice.

Food to die for! Image: DutchReview/Supplied

The food was so good that despite being full we tried our hardest to try and eat it all. But of course, you’re never too full for a dessert…

We both went for the creme-roll and lava cake, and they were delicious. It was so well presented that we almost felt guilty tucking into it.

We tried a variety of cocktails and honestly, hand on heart, they were some of the best cocktails I’ve ever tried (and I love my cocktails).

8. Aji

Aji is located in the ‘Pannekoekenstraat’ which is on the verge of being the new Witte de Wit when it comes to its offerings of restaurants.

Chef Pelle Swinkels, young and talented, teamed up with Mario Ridder, who is something of a celebrity in the restaurant world of Rotterdam.

Who doesn’t love a good terrace meal? Image: DutchReview

We started outside on their nice terrace — it was a joy to watch the street life pass by and enjoy those oysters, of course.

Served to perfection! Image: DutchReview

When it comes to the food, Aji refuses to fit neatly into one box. There are Asian influences, European gourmet food, and Latin American touches. I guess you could call it ‘fusion’, with an abundance of seafood on the menu too.

We can say that the level of cuisine and cooking is absolutely great when you compare it to the prices. All dishes were well-crafted and combined many flavours for roughly €10 to €25.

Let us ticket your tastebuds with this picture. Image: DutchReview

If you’re looking for a place to eat in Rotterdam that is trendy and relaxed and serves up some delicious and refined dishes, then you can’t go wrong with Aji.

9. Restaurant Van de Leur Rotterdam

Welcome to Restaurant Van de Leur in Rotterdam, where we enjoyed a fab seven-course meal. It’s one delicious dish after another, paired with elegant wines in a fairytale decor.

Just take a look at that this dish. 😍 Image: DutchReview

Van de Leur serves a few courses in a sitting; you can choose between four courses (€60) up to seven (€105).

The menu is updated frequently, so the food is always fresh, and if you’re not into meat or fish, you can indicate that, and they will adapt accordingly — no probs for your veggie/vegan friends. 🤗

They also offer paired wines and beers for every course, which developed into an excellent culinary and alcoholic adventure for us. 🍷

You should take your time as well, as you see the dishes are little works of art, and it takes some time to serve them out. We were there for four hours, and it’s not a quick bite before you see a movie or a play. Totally worth it, though. 💁🏻‍♀️

10. ROFFA Food

This one was on my to-feast-at list for a long time. BBQ meat, smoked specialities and craft beers from Rotterdam? Sign me up! So together with a few friends, we went to Roffa.

We love a dark and cosy interior. Image: DutchReview

Now, there are three things you should know about this one. One: “Roffa” is slang for Rotterdam, and it goes without saying that the Rotterdam-vibe is definitely there. Two: they’ve got two equally tasty locations in the Foodhallen Rotterdam and Rotterdam North. Three: this place does meat really, really well.

They’ve got an epic smoker and all those great BBQ specialities such as brisket, spicy chicken wings, pork belly and some of the best smoked sausage I ever tasted.

They’ve got an epic mixed meat platter — mix it up with some of these crafted beers from Rotterdam, and you get one happy DutchReviewer.

If you’re looking for a place to eat some great bbq-meat (don’t worry, they’ve got some vegetarian options for you too), then we can definitely recommend the Roffa street food bar.

11. Bertmans

Not in the market for all that meat? This one is for you.

Bertmans has two locations, one in Rotterdam Noord and one in downtown Rotterdam at the Schouwburgplein (just a short walk from Central Station).

We’re a sucker for gezellig terraces! Image: DutchReview

Out go stuffy establishments, and in come the funky and delicious hotspots of Rotterdam. So sit down on their nice (and heated) terrace and watch the colourful people walk by.

Bertmans is not a vegetarian restaurant by definition, but if you’re a veggie or just into healthy and organic food then you definitely came to the right place. They boast an awesome selection of healthy dishes and make them look good too; plenty of choice!

We can’t resist. Image: DutchReview

They change the menu every now and there’s bound to be something new there for you. Portions were pretty big, which is great, considering prices were fairly modest too.

If you’re searching for a hip and healthy spot to eat in Rotterdam, Bertmans is a solid choice!

12. Vessel 11

DutchReview made it to Vessel 11 in Rotterdam to try out their new spring and summer menu! The restaurant is hard to miss because it’s a refurbished red boat, fully equipped with a deck that overlooks the water.

They have an assortment of beers, great choices in meals, and delicious desserts. They are a British gastro-pub, so you can expect traditional British dishes and alcohol.

It’s hard to miss the red. Image: DutchReview

We tried their V11 Indian Pale Ale and V11 Golden Blonde beers. The atmosphere is relaxed but lively, with everyone happily chatting away with each other over a few pints.

Nothing quite like an ice cold biertje by the water. Image: DutchReview

We didn’t have to wait too long before our main courses arrived: their Vegan Hot Pot and their Herefordshire Hamburger.

The Vegan Hot Pot came in a small dish, but I was positively stuffed! It came with a side of sourdough toast, with lentils, some good ol’ veggies and topped with chives.

It was perfect for one person, and it ticked all my boxes for nutrition, deliciousness, and presentation.

Love us a colourful meal. Image: DutchReview

The hamburger was equally delicious, with a generous portion of fries (chips, as the British call them). They get their meat from the local butcher Beter Leven, known for their ethical practices.

Doesn’t get crispier than this! Image: DutchReview

No meal is complete without a dessert to end it with. On recommendation from the staff, we tried their cheesecake and it was the perfect way to end the meal, with its biscuit base and sweet top.

All-in-all it was a positively enjoyable experience for us! They also host many live musical acts. Unfortunately, there wasn’t one scheduled for the evening we were there, but their agenda for the coming months looks promising!

13. Koffiebar Namasté

Founded by the friendly Dutchie Jordy, Koffiebar Namasté opened its doors in May 2020. Located in the hip area of Katendrecht, it’s the perfect place for a weekend brunch.

Next to delicious coffee from a local coffee roaster, Namasté offers a wide selection of teas and homemade beverages. Their menu boasts dishes from all across the world — from Rotterdam toasties to Middle Eastern foods.

Our personal recommendation is the delicious shakshuka. You can either go for the classic one with tomatoes and roasted paprika or the green one with spinach, lentils and dill — with some feta cheese on top. 😍

You’ve arrived in Amsterdam […]]]>

Welcome to our epic guide to edibles in Amsterdam for 2024 (and yes, we’ll tell you where to get the best space cake as well, no stress!)

You’ve arrived in Amsterdam and want the full-blown Dutch experience. So you put on clogs, buy a wheel of cheese, bike to the nearest canal, and hire a boat.

But instead of blowing clouds of smoke as you chug along the canal, why not drop a trail of crumbs instead?

Swap out that joint for an edible bought from one of Amsterdam’s best coffeeshops.

But first, you might be wondering:

  • What is an edible?
  • How many edibles should I consume?
  • Will I get too high?
  • And where can I buy the best edibles in Amsterdam?

After years of exploring Amsterdam for some of its finest weed brownies and space cakes (I’m not a fan of smoking), I can safely say that Amsterdam has some of the most delicious and high-inducing edibles on offer — you just have to know where to look.

Here’s all you need to know about edibles in Amsterdam.

What are edibles?

Edibles are food items that are infused with cannabis with the goal of getting high.

They are typically sweet items like space cakes, brownies or gummies, but almost any food item can be turned into an edible treat. We’ve seen weed biscuits, weed shakes, and even weed pasta, to name just a few.

photo-of-weed-brownies-on-cloth-with-marijuana-leaves-bought-in-amsterdam
Caution: these brownies may look delicious, but don’t eat too many in one sitting. Image: Depositphotos

So why not just eat straight weed (vegetables, right?)? Well, the part of the marijuana that gets you high is called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and it needs heat to kickstart it.

This is why if you just eat straight cannabis, you won’t feel its intoxicating effects — but just eat a kind of weird salad instead.

Where to buy the best edibles in Amsterdam

While you can buy edibles in virtually any coffeeshop you come across, not all edibles in Amsterdam are created equal. Some of my favourites are below, guaranteed to get you high (but not too high!) and taste delicious.

Red Velvet Space Cake: from Boerejongens

Boerejongens have received a stack of awards for their Red Velvet Space Cake— and luckily, there are multiple Boerenjongens coffeeshops all over Amsterdam.

We particularly like these stores because they’re fresh, modern, and ridiculously clean. They also welcome everyone: tourists, locals, first-timers, grandmas, neighbours — whoever! And just check out those space cakes. 😍

Spacetry: available at various coffeeshops

The Spacetrys (like a pastry, get it?) are delicious on their own, but the high you get from them is top-notch. The range is stocked at Boerejongens, CoffeeshopAmsterdam, Tweede Kamer, and Coffeeshop DNA coffeeshops. You can even find limited edition versions for the holidays, like Valentine’s Day! 💕

Chocolate Brownie: from Coffeeshop Amsterdam

Want to get the best brownie in Amsterdam instead? That honour goes to Coffeeshop Amsterdam, a crowd favourite, not just for me — the Google Reviews are top-notch!

Tips for buying edibles in Amsterdam

Edibles vary wildly in quality throughout Amsterdam. Here are some tips to get something delicious — and not get ripped off:

  • Don’t buy space cakes from tourist shops. Only coffeeshops are allowed to sell THC-infused cakes in Amsterdam. Tourist shops label cakes as “space cakes” but they only contain hemp, so they won’t get you high.
  • Your edible should have information on the package advising how to eat it and how much THC is inside. Avoid those that don’t; they might have no THC or be unregulated, leading to you either getting too high or not high enough.
  • Choose one that looks delicious! Trust me, some space cakes are like eating cardboard. You might as well enjoy the taste.

Edibles and strains: the different types of edibles in Amsterdam

Not all edibles are created equal. In fact, like the different types of weed in Amsterdam, edibles vary depending on what strain is used.

Weed vs. hash-based edibles

Weed is the dried cannabis plant, cultivated mainly from flowering buds. Hash, on the other hand, is a paste made from resin and sap from the plant.

Hash produces stronger effects because it possesses a higher concentration of THC than the dried plant — so an edible made with hash may give you a stronger high (depending on the quantity used and consumed).

Indica vs. sativa-based edibles

There are two sub-species of cannabis. Indica-based weed will provide more of a body high and sativa-based cannabis will produce more of a head high.

You can also get hybrid cannabis, and many shops will sell a blend of the two.

THC vs. CBD in edibles

Finally, there are thousands of possible cannabinoids that weed can contain, but the most common cannabinoids are THC and CBD (cannabidiol).

THC produces psychoactive effects, while CBD doesn’t produce a head high. CBD is, however, hailed as a miracle worker for pain relief, easing mental stress, and assisting sleep.

Why should you eat your way to a high?

Have you not heard that smoking is bad for you? As well as not exercising, binge drinking, eating junk food, and.. well, the list goes on.

Smoking a joint will make you feel high almost instantly but will fade fast. In comparison, an edible like a space cake can take a few hours before you feel the effects, but you’ll feel high for much longer.

Edibles are also a more discreet way to consume marijuana. If you’re heading to the movies and don’t want to stink of smoke, then eating a space cake will do the trick.

Or if you’re home and don’t want to spark complaints of a weedy smell from neighbours, edibles are a great alternative.

Eating edibles in Amsterdam: what you need to know

Ready to go and stock up on the best edibles that can be found in Amsterdam? Here are a few quick tips first.

Edibles absorb differently in your body

Some people don’t notice a difference, but others say they do. Even the best weed connoisseurs have been caught off-guard by edibles.

The main aspect of edibles to be wary of is the delayed high. It will come on much slower compared to smoking a joint or inhaling a bong.

Once you eat your edible, it travels to your gut, where it’s broken down, and the food is converted into energy. The cannabis compounds are metabolised in the liver and then circulated throughout the body and brain.

Given the edibles need to be absorbed through the digestive system, this creates a delayed onset in comparison to smoking, where effects are felt almost instantly.

Eat your edible gradually and be patient

A lot of people eat half a brownie, expect it to kick it five minutes later, and when it doesn’t, they smash the other half. Then an hour later, it all hits at once; they become incredibly stoned and end up having a bad trip.

Believe me, I saw this happen to a classmate of mine when I was studying in the Netherlands, and it was not pretty. Even worse, it lasted for six hours!

As New York Times columnist,

“What could go wrong with a bite or two?
Everything, as it turned out. Not at first. For an hour, I felt nothing. But then I felt a scary shudder go through my body and brain. I barely made it from the desk to the bed, where I lay curled up in a hallucinatory state for the next eight hours.”

Take it slow, figure out your tolerance, and stick within your limit.

A good practice is to eat a small, manageable amount, then wait two to four hours for it to kick in fully. Trust us: being a bit less high is 100% preferable to having a bad trip.

Know how much of your edible you should eat

Each edible should state on the packaging how many milligrams of weed are inside. As a rough starting point, 10 milligrams is considered a single serving for an adult.

But if you have never had an edible before, we recommend starting smaller. Even if the packaging says to eat half of the space cake, you might need only a fraction of that for a comfortable high.

Always keep in mind: start low and go slow.

If you get too high, here’s what to do

There’s nothing worse than feeling too high or out of control. If the heebie-jeebies hit, here are a few quick tips:

  • First, breathe deeply. Remember, no one has ever died from a weed overdose.
  • Put on a funny show or podcast to distract yourself.
  • Drink a glass of water.
  • Eat a snack: pine nuts, lemon, and peppercorns are all scientifically proven to reduce the effects of a high.
  • Give a friend a call and let them talk you down.
  • Take a relaxing shower.
  • Take a walk through some quiet streets — but remember your charged phone so you don’t get lost in Amsterdam.
  • Try to sleep it off.

Want to make your own edibles? Here are the dos and don’ts

Although weed affects people differently, sativa-based weed will give the users a head high and indica-based weed is a body high that is better for relaxation and sleep. So consider this when picking the strain of weed for your edibles.

You’ll need to look up a recipe online (there are many of them out there), but here is a brief overview of the dos and don’ts:

What’s next?

Edibles are a fantastic way to experience the weed culture in Amsterdam, as long you take it slow, start small, and go with the flow.

Of course, edibles like space cakes aren’t the only way to go. You can also check out truffles, CBD oil, hash, or even ecstasy.
