Great news! Time to dust off your sunglasses, as spring is set to arrive in the Netherlands with a spell of dry and sunny days this weekend.

In fact, ditch your winter coats as well, warmer weather is also on the horizon, making a change from the infamous cold Dutch downpours.

The sun is already shining and the temperature is finally into the double figures. Well, just about.ย

Today, it will be about 10 degrees today, and a few clouds remain, but Buienradar confirms there will also be plenty of blue skies to enjoy.

Translation: In the south, sun and cumulus clouds alternate. There are more clouds in the north, but the clouds are gradually dissipating. What will it look like tomorrow?!

The weekend is warming up

It just gets better โ€” by tomorrow there wonโ€™t be a cloud in the sky.

And Saturday? It will feel HOT (by Dutch standards, at least), with southerly regions set to enjoy temperatures as high as 16 degrees.ย

No fear, the north wonโ€™t be far behind at a (slightly balmy) 13 degrees.

We canโ€™t believe it! And maybe for good reasonโ€ฆ

Helaas, the clouds will creep back from Sunday onwards, and they threaten to bring some rain with them.ย

You know what that means: you better embrace the spring in your step this weekend and make the most of it!

Did you see it last night? Dutch skies were graced by the beautiful Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, on Sunday evening.

The Lights were particularly visible to the naked eye in the northern provinces, but were also seen in Hoek van Holland and Enschede, reports the NOS.

Missed catching a glimpse of them? Take a look at last night’s captures:

How do the Northern Lights work?

Auroras are caused by solar flares from the sun. Charged particles enter spaces and are drawn to the north and south poles of Earth, where the magnetic field is strongest.

The particles pass through Earth’s atmosphere at high speed and collide. Energy is released and creates the colourful patterns in the sky that seem to dance.

Typically, the Aurora Borealis is seen much further north in Scandinavia, but they’re visible in the Netherlands for a few days in the year. ๐Ÿคฉ

Your best chance at spotting the lights is to find a light-pollution-free area in the Netherlands on a dark night with a clear sky.

Did you see the Northern Lights last night? Have you seen them before? Tell us about it in a comment below!

If you were hoping to step outside your door tomorrow and enjoy a refreshing walk, we’re going to have to advise against it. Yet another code yellow storm is on its way to the Netherlands.

Yep, you know the drill by now. Tomorrow is a day for tea, working from home, and seasonal depression.

The KNMI (Royal Dutch Weather Institute) has announced that wind gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour will batter the coast and make their way across the entire country tomorrow.

They’ll eventually subside at 11 PMย โ€” just in time for that evening walk. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Oh, and it’s also going to rain

If that’s not enough to dampen your spirits, don’t you worry, the rain can do that for you.

Omroep West reports that aside from winds that will blow even a seasoned Dutchie off their bike, it’s going to rain cats and dogs.

In good news, temperatures are at least set to remain mild โ€” so you’ll only get wind-whipped and soaked should you have to step outside.

Oh, the joys.

Have you been breaking a sweat on your daily bike ride lately? Yup, it’s warm. Weirdly warm for a Dutch February, in fact. But it’s about to get even worse.

The warm temperatures will stay with us throughout the rest of this week, reaching their peak on Thursday, February 15, of up to 16 degrees Celsius. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

For reference, the average temperature in the Netherlands in February is around 7 degrees.

As meteorologist Maurice Middendorp tells RTL Nieuws, “this month is way too warm so far”. Due to the heat, crocuses have already started blooming around the country.

(But some people still think global warming isn’t real… ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ)

You guessed it: rain is also on the way

Despite the rising temperatures, we are not getting spring vibes just yet. Instead, Dutch weather will continue doing what it does best: rain.

The sun may bless us occasionally on Valentine’s Day, but in spite of the balmy temperatures, clouds and rain will dominate throughout the rest of the week.

It’s time to get that scarf out from the back of your closet! ๐Ÿงฃ Meteorologists expect a layer of snow to cover parts of the Netherlands today.

After the end of January saw unusually warm temperatures and dryness, today will be an “interesting weather day”, Hart van Nederland reports.

Snow in parts of the Netherlands

Wondering if you’ll be walking in a winter wonderland today? Let’s see.๐Ÿ‘‡

As you’d expect, it’s mostly the north of the country that has a chance of seeing a few centimetres of sneeuw today โ€” especially the provinces of Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland.

Further down, a thin blanket of snow may also fall above the Amsterdam-Twente line.

In the evening, at around 5 PM, heavy precipitation is expected in Zeeland, but it’s unsure whether that will result in snow or plain ol’ rain.

A wet carnival weekend

Celebrating Carnival this weekend? Expect to be holding a biertje in one hand and an umbrella in the other. โ˜”๐Ÿบ

Although temperatures will stay mild at around 10 degrees Celsius, we can expect a fair amount of rain. But hey, I guess you can just get drunk enough not to care. ๐Ÿ˜‰

After this weekend, the Netherlands will see warmer and dry weather throughout.

It’s time to defrost your sunglasses and ditch the big coats: Sunshine and warm temperatures are coming to the Netherlands this week.

Since winds are coming our way from the southwest, the cold has no real chance in the this week. The result? Maximum temperatures will range between a whopping 9 and 13 degrees Celsius during the day and not fall below 5 degrees at night.

Usually, normal afternoon temperatures at this time of year are around 5 or 6 degrees.

Tuesday, in particular, has a chance of breaking a heat record, with temperatures rising to over 13 degrees in the south of the country. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

A dry start and an unruly end

On top of the warm temperatures, the Netherlands can expect a (nearly) rain-free week this week.

If rain does manage to make its way through the clouds, then we’ll only see it falling very faintly.

Of course, all things come to an end, and the Netherlands will return to its regularly scheduled program with many clouds, lots of rain, and strong winds by the end of the week.

Looking forward to the sunny weather later this week? So are we! There’s just one problem: we have to get through Storm Jocelyn first.

We were rejoicing this morning at the news that sunshine is on its way to the Netherlands, but it turns out something else is as well โ€” a code yellow storm.

Yep, we’re not in the clear yet. The KNMI is warning of strong winds that will hit the Netherlands tonight and last until Wednesday morning.

Rain and intense winds

Weeronline, also speaks of an intense downpour across the country, during which winds will be VERY strong. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

How strong? Jocelyn is predicted to bring wind force 9 winds on average, meaning tonight is not the night to step outside for a leisurely wellness stroll.

Coastal regions can expect gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour, and those of us living inland won’t be much safer, with winds of up to 75 kilometres per hour forecast.

While it may look all doom and gloom tonight, once Jocelyn has swept through the country, we can rejoice and enjoy a spot of spring-like weather.

Nearly there guys โ€” just stay safe tonight. ๐Ÿฅฒ

After snow, freezing temperatures, a storm warning, and strong winds, sunny spring-like weather in the Netherlands is now on the cards.

While everyone was busy skating on canals, building snowmen, and bracing for Storm Isha, the Dutch weather had something nice up its sleeve.

While it will continue to be windy, especially around coastal regions, we will see a good amount of sun throughout the week, writes Buienrader.

A calm week for the weather

Lucky for us, this week will remain mostly sunny, with only the occasional cloud field floating by.

You can also ditch the umbrella, as there will only be a slight chance of rain across the country in the evenings.

Temperatures will also slowly rise from a maximum of 8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday up to 10 degrees on Saturday โ€” perfect weather for taking a walk and enjoying the shining sun!

Are you looking forward to the spring-like weather in the Netherlands? Tell us in the comments!

If you thought snow and ice were the worst of your worries, you better hold onto your hats. There’s a storm coming to the Netherlands.

We mean it, hold your hats! Meteorologists are predicting strong winds reaching wind force 8 or 9 on Sunday night.

Speaking with Het Parool, meteorologist Donny de Koning of Weerplaza explains that โ€œvery heavy gusts of wind can occur on the coast, up to 100 kilometres per hour.โ€

This doesn’t mean those of us living inland will be spared, with De Koning predicting that even inland winds could reach up to 75 kilometres per hour.

He is backed up by the KNMI, which has said there’s an 80-90% chance of a code yellow being announced on Sunday night.

Watch out for falling trees and traffic

As a result of the strong winds, it is expected that many of us will find ourselves stuck in traffic on Monday morning โ€” so if you can, avoid taking the car out.

In fact, you should avoid any sort of commute. De Koning warns that given the wetness of the soil at the moment, trees can easily uproot and fall over.

Kiss the snow goodbye

This wind also comes with warmer temperatures, meaning it’s time to kiss the snow goodbye (but hey, who knows, maybe it will come back in April).

In fact, you can kiss your winter jacket goodbye as well.

Meteorologists are anticipating that temperatures may rise as high as 12 degrees, meaning we might just see the warmest January ever recorded. (Talk about switching things up! ๐Ÿ˜ณ)

Will the winter weather continue? The beginning of this week was a snowy one for many in the Netherlands โ€” but will the wintery weather continue on this wonderful Wednesday? And what about the rest of the week?

Here’s what KNMI has to say! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Snow only in the south

If you’re living in the south of the country in regions such as Limburg and Brabant, then you’re in luck! At least, if you love snow.

In Limburg, it will start to slow lightly this morning and is expected to continue essentially throughout the rest of the day, evening and night.

In fact, the KNMI has announced a Code Yellow weather warning for the south-east and is forecasting up to 15cm of snow! โ„

For the rest of us, life must return to a non-snowy normality. While we can certainly expect freezing weather (expect icy conditions this morning!), we won’t have the snow to go with it.

If you want to catch some sunshine, this morning is the time to do it. From this afternoon, we can expect clouds with rain forecast for the north.

Sunshine AND snow?

However, Dutch weather likes to keep us on our toes.

Which is why tomorrow morning and afternoon, a large part of the country can expect a healthy dose of sunshine โ€” followed by a chance of snow.

Tomorrow evening, coastal provinces can brace for more snow coming from the west, as well as strong winds.

In summary, we’d recommend you don’t forget your sunnies or your winter boots. ๐Ÿ˜Ž โ„
